He made his first television appearance in the series Another World . After several small roles, he took on the 1979 sitcom Brothers & Sisters for the first time a major supporting role by portraying the student Ronald Holmes III . The series was discontinued after one season and 12 episodes and Brooks was cast in sometimes larger, sometimes smaller supporting roles in television series or films in the following years. In 1982 he characterized the undercover agent Eagle in the six-part television series The Renegades .

In 1986, Brooks played Willie "Chance" Walker in the adaptation of the novel 8 Million Ways to Die , which was his first feature film with a major supporting role and marked a leap in his career as he was henceforth frequently cast in feature films. In 1992 he got his most famous role to date in Quentin Tarantino's cult film Reservoir Dogs . In it he takes on the role of Holdaway , a criminal investigator who prepares Mr. Orange (played by Tim Roth ) for his assignment as an undercover agent. The cut scenes last a total of about six minutes and can be viewed today on the Internet or on the DVD of the film.

Between 1992 and 1994, Brooks starred in six episodes of Nathan Hastings in the hit soap offering Shadow of Passion, and between 2000 and 2005 he made several brief appearances on the TV series The West Wing .
