Career start in Biberist

Koch began his active career as a football player in 1997 at FC Biberist in Biberist in the canton of Solothurn . After spending a few years there in the various youth teams of the club, he moved with his brother to the main town of Solothurn , where they were accepted into the youth team of FC Solothurn . There he played mainly in the youth team from his admission in 2001, but in the 2006/07 season he played for the first time in the men's team with play in the third-class Swiss first division . He made his competitive debut on September 16, 2006 when he was used in the 4-0 away win over FC Kickers Luzern in the 84th minute of play for Deniz Mendi , who was active in Swiss professional football in the late 1990s.

First experiences in men's football

After this brief stint this season, Koch advanced to become a regular regular in his team's defensive line in the subsequent third division season 2007/08. He was used in 25 of the total of 30 championship games of his team and scored one goal. This he succeeded on September 22, 2007 in a 7-1 victory over SC Zofingen and was also the 1-1 equalizer. After he finished sixth with the team in the final table, he experienced a similar following season in 2008/09, with the exception that he was increasingly on the pitch for the full duration of the game. In 24 league games he once again scored a goal and came in ninth place in the final table of the third-highest Swiss league.

Professional debut at FC Zurich

After his younger brother had switched to FC Zurich two seasons earlier and even won the Swiss championship there in the 2008/09 season, the trained polymechanic followed his younger brother and decided to move to Zurich in May 2009 . Although Koch, who at that time was just taking the final exams to become a federally qualified polymechanic, was only eligible to play for FC Zurich from July 1, 2009, he had already signed a three-year contract with the Zurich city club. At FC Zurich he was only used sporadically in his first professional season in 2009/10 , who was thrown back two years in his footballing development due to knee and meniscus problems and two resulting operations .

Raphael Koch, who already held a wide variety of positions in the course of his young career, is viewed by those responsible at FC Zurich as a central defender and is also used as such in the current league. Previously, in his early youth, he was mainly a midfielder at FC Biberist , where he assumed a central position. After moving to the youth department of FC Solothurn, he was converted to a full-back and from then on had to act more defensively than he had previously learned. In addition to the position of full defender, he also held the positions of wing and midfielder in Solothurn , but was also used as a striker .

He made his professional debut on August 15, 2009 at FC Zurich, where he should first gain experience in the Swiss third division of the U-21 team and only then slowly move to professional football. He came on in the 67th minute of the game for Florian Stahel and thus played briefly alongside his younger but more successful brother. After that, Koch only played in the second team (U-21) from Zurich. To date (as of October 3, 2010), Raphael Koch has not played in any other league games for FC Zurich. With the exception of a game in the Swiss Cup 2010/11 on September 18, 2010 (6-0 victory over FC Schötz ), he also did not play another competitive game for the club's professional team. At the end of June 2011 it was announced that FC Zurich was extending the contract with Raphael Koch until 2015. For the 2011/12 season he was often used as a substitute. But when he got to the game, he usually played for more than 45 minutes. Due to injured teammates, he usually played 90 minutes. He scored his first goal for FC Zurich on August 7, 2011 against city rivals Grasshopper Club Zurich (6-0). In the 54th minute, Koch met the interim 3-0 lead.

He has been without a club since summer 2015. In autumn 2016 he finally rejoined his parent club, FC Solothurn.

National team

Koch was able to gain his first international experience in 2008, when he was appointed to a Swiss junior national team for the first time. For the U-19 national team, he made his team debut on November 26, 2008, when he was used in the 1-0 victory over his colleagues from Canada . Another four missions and one goal followed. He scored his first goal for a Swiss national team on June 7, 2009 in a clear 6-1 win over the Northern Ireland U-19 team .

In the same year he was also appointed to the squad of the Swiss U-20 national team. Here he made his team debut on August 12, 2009, when he was on the field for the full game in the 5-1 away win over the Austrian U-20s . Koch played five international matches for the Swiss U-20 national team . He played his last game on April 28, 2010 in a 3-2 home defeat against the Italian U-20 national team , when he played through the full length of the match.

In the first game after the U-21 European Championship in 2011 , Raphael Koch made his debut in the Swiss U-21 national team against his contemporaries from Italy . During the first half he was the left central defender at the Stadio Franco Ossola in Varese. For the second half he was substituted for his brother Philippe Koch . The game ended in a 1-1 draw. The only goal for the Swiss came from his club-mate Josip Drmic in the 27th minute. Raphael Koch scored his first goal for the U-21 national team on November 10, 2011 during the qualifying game against Georgia. In the 64th minute he scored the 5-0 final result at the Stadio di Cornaredo in Lugano .
