The Rapti rises in the Makwanpur district in the southern part of the Mahabharat chain, about 25 km southwest of Kathmandu . It initially flows through the mountains in a westerly and southwestern direction before turning south.
At Hetauda he leaves the mountains and turns to the west. It now flows in a wide valley, which is bordered in the south by a Siwalik chain , in a westerly direction. It flows through the northern part of the Parsa Game Reserve and then along the northern border of the Chitwan National Park . The town of Sauraha is located on the riverbank and is an important access point to the national park and belongs to the city of Ratnanagar . In the lower reaches of the Rapti runs in the Chitwan district . Finally, 30 km west-southwest of the city of Bharatpur, it flows into the Narayani River, which flows to the south-west. The Rapti has a length of 122 km. Its catchment area covers 3222 km².
