Rattwitz is located in the western urban area of ​​Bautzen about two kilometers from the city center. Surrounding villages are Temritz in the north, Teichnitz in the northeast, the Bautzen core town in the east, the district Grubschütz belonging to the municipality Doberschau-Gaussig in the south, the districts Oberförstchen belonging to the municipality Göda in the southwest and Dreistern in the west as well as the Bautzen district Salzenforst in the northwest.

The Saxon State Road 111 runs through Rattwitz from Göda to Bautzen. The federal motorway 4 runs from Dresden to Görlitz directly north of the village .

history

Rattwitz was first mentioned in 1386 as "Ratewicz". In the following time the name changed from "Radywicz" in 1400 to "Rathewicz" in 1451 and "Rottwitcz" in 1469 to today's "Rattwitz" in 1584. In 1751 the name "Radewitz" was mentioned. In Rattwitz there was a manor from 1563 at the latest , whose lords held the manorial rule over the village.

Until April 1, 1936, Rattwitz was an independent rural community, then the place was incorporated into Stiebitz . As part of the community of Stiebitz, Rattwitz was assigned to the then newly formed Bautzen district in the Dresden district on July 25, 1952 . After the reunification in the GDR , Rattwitz came to the city of Bautzen on January 1, 1994 as part of the incorporation of Stiebitz . On August 1, 1994, the place was assigned to the old Bautzen district , since the district reform in Saxony on August 1, 2008 , the village has belonged to the Bautzen district .

Population and language

For the year 1777 in Rattwitz three were gardeners and four Häusler recorded. In 1834 the place had 65 inhabitants. The number of inhabitants in the village rose from 82 in 1871 to 146 in 1910. In 1925, Rattwitz had 266 inhabitants, of which 239 were Evangelical Lutheran and 27 were Catholics .

For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 87 inhabitants for 1884, of which 79 were Sorbs (91%) and 8 were Germans.
