The young Grace marries into the family of her groom Alex Le Domas. The Le Domas are a traditional, very wealthy dynasty of producers of board games . The wedding takes place on the family estate. Afterwards, Grace is confronted with a family tradition that surprised her: after a wedding, all family members meet at midnight to play a board game with the person marrying in. With this they introduce the new person into the family and at the same time honor a man named Le Bail, who helped the great-grandfather of the current business owner to manufacture playing cards, which laid the foundation for the family fortune. A mechanical machine selects the game to be played in the form of a randomly drawn playing card. In the case of Grace, this is not a board game or card game, but a game of hide and seek . Grace has to hide in the sprawling Victorian mansion while the assembled family has to look for her. In addition to Grace's newly wedded husband Alex, these are the family patriarch Tony, his wife Becky, Alex's brother Daniel and his wife Charity, Alex's sister Emilie and her husband Fitch, and Tony's sister Helene. There are also three female employees and the butler Stevens in the house.
What Grace does not know: While all other playing cards would have resulted in harmless parlor games, the "hide and seek" card sets in motion another bizarre ritual: the person hiding has to be hunted down and sacrificed by the family until sunrise. According to an old curse, all family members would otherwise die at sunrise. While Grace searches for a hiding place, the family arm themselves and go in search of her. Husband Alex stays behind for a while and then, out of love for Grace, decides to help her.
The hunting party first accidentally decimates the servants. Alex is able to find Grace, explains the situation to her and forges an escape plan with her: Grace is supposed to escape through the servants' wing, while Alex overrides the electronic control system that keeps all exits from the house locked. Grace manages to overpower the butler Stevens and flee the house, but Alex is tracked down, knocked down, and tied to a bed by Tony and Daniel.
Stevens pursues Grace, can put her in a wooded area and drives her back towards the property. Grace attacks the butler while he is driving, causing an accident. She escapes from the car but is captured by Daniel and Tony. The sacrifice ceremony, at which Grace is to be killed, begins. Since Daniel, tired of the family capers, has added emetics to the ritual wine, all family members vomit while Grace can escape with Daniel. Daniel is shot by his wife Charity, and Grace runs into Alex's arms. When the latter realizes that Grace would leave him even if he survived, he imprisoned her and summoned the rest of the family. The ritual is started again, but since the dawn is breaking, all members of the family gradually explode. The family property burns down, but Grace is able to leave it in time and is received by the arriving rescue workers.

In November 2017, Fox Searchlight Pictures acquired the rights to the script from Guy Busick and Ryan Murphy and announced the production of the film. The director took over with Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett two members of the filmmaker collective Radio Silence Productions , which previously in the productions V / H / S - A murderous collection , Devil's Due and Southbound was involved. Ready or Not received positive reviews almost across the board. The Rotten Tomatoes review database aggregates 208 reviews to an overall rating of 88%.
The Rolling Stone pointed out that Ready or Not in a satirical way the institution attacking marriage. The magazine praised the acting skills of Samara Weaving and Nicky Guadagni, as well as the film's energy and humor, but criticized the plot as predictable. The New Yorker positively emphasized a “capable” cast and “happy-macabre” types of death at the beginning of the film, but assessed that the film would become predictable in the further course, “botch” elements of humor and drama and result in a pointless plot point . The Washington Post described the film as "professionally made (and) polished to a shine" and praised Guadagni's playing, but described the performance of the rest of the ensemble as pale and criticized the dialogues in which shrewdness was simply replaced by swear words.
