history

The field name Reiat (also Raigen, Reygat or Reiett) was originally designated for an area near Büttenhardt (rearmost Hinteres Freudental / Reiathöfe) and gradually used as a landscape name for the entire area from the 15th century. The Reiat was originally owned by the Counts of Tengen and was sold to the House of Austria in 1465 . In 1529 the city of Schaffhausen acquired the lower jurisdiction over the Reiat from the Paradies monastery and it was not until 1723 that the high jurisdiction was acquired by Schaffhausen. The Reiat was a Schaffhausen Obervogtei with its seat in Thayngen Castle until 1798 , then a Helvetian district and from 1803 a district. In 1999 the Reiat district was abolished, but a Reiat constituency still exists today.

geology

The undulating portion of the Reiat is the eastern part of a white Jura - layer level and is part of between Basel and Coburg extending Tafeljura -Landscape element and thus of the so-called South West German layer levels country . The layer level continues over the large north-south valley of the Durach (Merishausener valley), which partially delimits the Reiat, to the west, where the randen marks the western part of the layer level. The highest elevation in the Reiat is the Bol in Baden-Württemberg at 786  m above sea level. M. , around 100 m east of the Swiss border near Wiechs am Randen . The villages of Stetten, Büttenhardt, Lohn and Opfertshofen are located on the high plateau of the Reiat and are also known as the Upper Reiat .

The Reiat is very arid and stony, but there are clay deposits that are exploited for wages by the brickworks.
