Reigate and Banstead (often spelled Reigate & Banstead) is an administrative district with borough status in the county of Surrey in England . In the north it borders on Greater London . In addition to the administrative center Reigate, it includes the towns of Banstead , Horley and Redhill .
history
- 967: First documented mention of Banstead in an Anglo-Saxon charter from the time of King Edgar .
- In 1088, after the Battle of Hastings, the land around Reigate was assigned to one of the knights of William the Conqueror , William de Warenne , to whom he also gave the title of Earl of Surrey.
- Around 1150, the de Warennes ordered that a city be built below their castle: Reigate.
- 12th century: A great hall is built at Tadworth (excavated 1952).
- In 1539 Horley Manor came to Henry VIII after the monasteries were dissolved .
- In 1563 Queen Elizabeth gave Lord Howard of Effingham, who lived in the priory of Reigate, the crown lands of the hamlet of Kingswoode (today: Kingswood).
- In 1602 Horley Manor becomes the property of Christ's Hospital in London.
- Redhill was born in 1818 with the construction of a junction on the London - Brighton trunk road .
- April 1, 1974: The new Reigate and Banstead District is created from the merger of the Borough of Reigate , the Banstead Urban District and part of the Dorking and Horley Rural District .
Town twinning
Since May 4, 1985, there has been a twinning between the English Borough of Reigate and Banstead and the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Eschweiler ; In honor of this partnership, the square in front of Eschweiler Hauptbahnhof was officially renamed Reigate & Banstead-Platz on September 26, 1989 .
Another city partnership exists with the city of Brunoy in the northern French region of Île-de-France .
