Renate Astrid Schimkoreit (* 18th October 1954 in Brandenburg ) is a German journalist , nonfiction author and diplomat .

Life

After graduating from high school in Ludwigshafen am Rhein , Renate Schimkoreit began studying political science , economics and Islamic studies in 1973 , which she completed in 1979 with a master's degree from the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg . In 1982 she did her doctorate there with a dissertation on the subject of regesting published Safavid rulers' deeds: decrees and state letters of the early modern period of Iran . Afterwards Renate Schimkoreit, who was married to the journalist, publicist and Islam expert Marcel Pott , worked as a scientific advisor in Beirut and then from 1984 to 1986 as a freelance journalist in Beirut and reported for Die Weltwoche , the Tages-Anzeiger and the Mannheimer Tomorrow from Lebanon , Jordan , Syria and Iraq . During this time she also wrote the book Beirut with Marcel Pott in 1985 : Between the Cross and the Koran about the country shaped by the Lebanese civil war .

career

In 1986 she joined the Foreign Service and after completing the career test for the higher service in 1988, she was initially employed as a consultant for politics and the press at the embassy in Jordan and then for a short time in 1990 first as a consultant in the press department and from 1990 to 1992 as a consultant in Section 013 of the Foreign Office . In 1992 she became an economic advisor at the embassy in the People's Republic of China and then from 1994 to 1996 advisor for EU foreign policy at the Federal Foreign Office before she became permanent representative of the ambassador to Senegal . Between 1999 and 2002 she was initially deputy head of division and from 2002 to 2003 head of division in the Foreign Office.

After a brief post as permanent representative of the Ambassador in Luxembourg , she was again Head of Division in the Foreign Office between 2003 and 2004. Subsequently, she was head of the economic services of the embassy in Turkey and from 2006 and 2008 again head of division in the Foreign Office. From 2008 to 2012 she was Consul General in Yekaterinburg, successor to Tilo Klinner , who in turn became inspector of the Foreign Office. From October 2012 to mid-2013 Renate Schimkoreit was the successor of Eberhard Schanze as ambassador in Accra (Ghana). After further language training, she moved to Almaty / Kazakhstan as Consul General in 2014 .

In August 2016 she succeeded Bernhard Kampmann as ambassador in Dakar (Senegal). As such, she was also accredited as ambassador to Gambia , Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde , based in Dakar. In 2017 she was replaced by Stephan Röken . Since then she has been working again as head of department in the Federal Foreign Office.
