The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance is an alliance of the three automobile manufacturers Renault , Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors .

history

On March 27, 1999, Louis Schweitzer and Yoshikazu Hanawa signed an alliance between Renault and Nissan in Tokyo . Three years later, on March 28, 2002, a BV was founded under Dutch law for a joint strategy and use of synergies : Renault-Nissan BV

In 2010, Renault-Nissan was the fourth largest automobile manufacturer with 6.7 million vehicles produced, behind Toyota , General Motors and Volkswagen AG, and ahead of the Hyundai Motor Group . Renault-Nissan was able to maintain its position from 2009, when 6.085 million vehicles were sold.

In 2014, Allianz took over the Russian car manufacturer AwtoWAS . This became part of the alliance with its Lada brand.

In 2016, Mitsubishi Motors joined the alliance as part of Nissan's entry into Mitsubishi .

In 2018, Allianz sold 10.76 million vehicles according to its own information.

Shares

The alliance is linked through a share swap. The resulting group “is based on trust and mutual respect”. Renault and Nissan each have a 40 percent stake in the alliance and Mitsubishi 20 percent.

Joint developments

In addition to a common platform strategy and jointly developed engines and components, there are also models that have emerged from badge engineering , such as E.g. the high-roof combination Renault Kangoo (= "Nissan Kubistar"), or the small vans (in cooperation with Opel ): Renault Trafic (= "Nissan Primastar") and Renault Master (= "Nissan Interstar").

Synergies between Renault and Nissan are systematically used and created. The previously 33 platforms will be merged into ten by 2010, which already saved 1.4 billion dollars in purchasing in 2005 and even higher sums in development work. Nissan Micra and Renault Modus and other models are based on the common B platform, the C platform, on which Mégane and Scenic are based, will be the basis for Nissan's compact models such as the Almera .

Successful models are built in the partner's foreign plants, such as the Renault Scenic in the Mexican Nissan plant in Cuernavaca , the Nissan pickup in the Renault plant in Brazil . Joint logistics and distribution strengthens Nissan by leveraging Renault's strong presence in Europe and South America and strengthens Renault by leveraging Nissan's strong position in East Asia, North America and Australia. The Indian market is now being tackled together.

Strategic cooperation with Daimler

In 2010 the Renault-Nissan alliance started a strategic cooperation with Daimler. Daimler has a 3.1% stake in Nissan and Renault, while Nissan and Renault each hold 1.55% of Daimler shares.

Common projects:

Participation in AwtoWAS

The Renault-Nissan Alliance announced in December 2012 that it intends to take over a majority in the Russian car manufacturer AwtoWAS through a joint venture called Alliance Rostec Auto BV . In mid-2014, 67.13% of the shares in Alliance Rostec Auto BV are to be held by Renault-Nissan, with Alliance Rostec Auto BV holding 74.5% in AwtoWAS. AwtoWAS is the largest automobile manufacturer in Russia and produces models of the Lada brand. In April 2014, Carlos Ghosn described AwtoWAS as “part of the alliance”. The sales figures of the Lada models have already been included in the list of sales results for Renault-Nissan in 2013. Renault-Nissan wants to make AwtoWAS more competitive through modernizations and lead Lada as the main brand in Russia. In addition, models from the Renault, Nissan, Datsun and Infiniti brands are to be offered in Russia.

Technical synergies are also created with AwtoWAS: Datsun on-Do is based on an adapted Lada Granta platform and is being built at the AwtoWAS plant in Togliatti , Russia .

Nissan joins Mitsubishi

According to an announcement by Nissan on May 12, 2016, Nissan acquired a total of 34% of the shares in Mitsubishi Motors by October 20, 2016 . In contrast to the stake in AwtoWAS, which was made by Renault-Nissan BV, this time it was the alliance partner Nissan alone who acquired the shares. Mitsubishi has been part of the Renault-Nissan alliance since then.
