The Rennsteiggarten Oberhof is laid out around the Pfanntalskopf and offers optimal living conditions for the mountain flora in this ridge of the Thuringian Forest. The annual average temperature is 4.2 ° C and around 1,400 liters of precipitation per m² fall . For about 150 days the plant cover is completely covered by snow. In this way the plants can develop their typical growth and flowering flora.

history

The foundation stone for the Botanical Garden was laid on September 5, 1970 in the site of the former quarry at Pfanntalskopf near Oberhof. Two years later, the Kulturbund and the Institute for Special Botany / Botanical Garden of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena concluded an agreement on scientific support for the Rennsteig Gardens .

The first plantings also took place in 1972. The plant material came from the Jena Botanical Garden . We also started to cultivate our own plants as a prerequisite for the design of the plant areas. Until 1975 the areas were designed and paths were laid out in charitable work . Seating groups and viewpoints as well as the water and energy supply were also provided.

By 1980 a plant was built that houses native raised bog plants . Five years later, work began on a nature conservation garden , in which specially protected plants from the Thuringian low mountain range are presented. This facility is intended to actively contribute to nature conservation by imparting knowledge.

In autumn 1992, trainees to become landscape gardeners began to create a stepless path to the “Pfanntalskopf” lookout point. This was continued until 1995 as a stepless circular route to the exit. The last section of this circular route was opened for use in 2005. This means that a large part of the garden can now be viewed barrier-free by wheelchair users, the mobility impaired, older guests and families with prams.

In the period from 1996 to 1998, models of a historic coal kiln and a charcoal burner's hut were designed to give visitors an impression of the craft traditions and living conditions of the charcoal burners.

There is a measuring point for precipitation and air pollutants (forest measuring stations Pfanntalskopf), which has been in operation since 1991.

flora

Due to the optimal climatic conditions, many representatives of well-known mountain plants such as gentians , primroses , bluebells , carnations , edelweiss and alpine roses develop their blossoms in the Rennsteig garden. The variety of colors is already great in spring thanks to saxifrage cushions , auricles , primroses and pasque flowers .

The nature reserve garden offers a selection of protected Thuringian plant species with spring gentian , flour primrose , spring Adonis flower and lady's slipper . The visitor can see the great diversity of the mountain flora here until autumn.

In 1993 the design of a Thuringian medicinal herb garden began . The creation of such a garden was also suggested by visitors.

Events

In the Rennsteiggarten there are regular events about the flora. The Rennsteig Garden Flower Festival has been celebrated every year since 1979 on a weekend during the main flowering season.

During the Herbal Days , which have been held annually since 2002, information about medicinal plants and herbs is provided. The visitors can also try the presented products and buy them.

Even in autumn, the Rennsteiggarten with its autumn festival offers its visitors the opportunity to experience the diverse flora accompanied by live music and artisan exhibitions.

For mushroom lovers find since 2005 fungal days instead. With the support of the Thuringian Society for Mycology , the focus is on mushroom advice and identification. Above all, mushrooms from local forests will be shown.
