Revelstoke is a place in the southeast of the Canadian province of British Columbia . Revelstoke is located 641 kilometers east of Vancouver and 415 kilometers west of Calgary in the Columbia Mountains on the Columbia River . Revelstoke is passed in an east-west direction from the Trans-Canada Highway ( Highway 1 ) and in a north-south direction from Highway 23 .
Mount Revelstoke National Park and the Revelstoke Dam, which dams the Columbia River to the approx. 120 km long Lake Revelstoke, are located directly north of the village .
history
The confluence of the Illecillewaet River with the Columbia River was a storage place for fur traders in the 19th century. It later became a supply point for miners in the region. The place continued to grow in the 1880s when the Canadian Pacific Railway was built and was called Farwell . After the completion of the railway in 1885, the settlement became a base of the railway line and was renamed Revelstoke after Lord Revelstoke (a noble title of the Baring family of banks , London), an investor in the railway line. The population of the community grew over time, so that on March 1, 1899 the granting of local self-government for the community took place ( incorporated ).
Demographics
The 2011 census revealed a population of 7,139 inhabitants for the municipality. The population has decreased by 1.3% compared to the 2006 census, while the population in British Columbia increased by 7.0%.
tourism
In addition to the Revelstoke Railway Museum , St. Peter's Anglican Church (Revelstoke) , the only surviving pioneer church in Revelstoke from 1896, is one of the local attractions.
In 2007, the Revelstoke Mountain Resort (RMR) was opened on the western slopes of Mount Mackenzie as a ski area with 52 slopes. Helicopter flights to ski descents are also offered for tourists, the so-called heliskiing .
