history

Between 856 and 891 the ghermo who lived in Rhene , about whom nothing else is known, gave a piece of his land to the Corvey monastery . The village of Rhene has existed since at least this point, making it one of the oldest settlements in the Wolfenbüttel district.

From the 10th to the 12th century, the Northeim counts owned Rhene. In addition, property owned by the Moritzstift in the village is mentioned in 1151 . Most of Rhenes, however, belonged to the Wöltingerode monastery . Its ownership was confirmed in documents in 1188 and 1216, among other things.

Until 1523 Rhene belonged to the Hildesheim Monastery . In the course of the collegiate feud from 1519 to 1523, the village came to the Principality of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel that year before it came back to Hildesheim in 1643. Until 1941 Rhene was in the district of Marienburg . In the course of the area consolidation in the area of the Hermann-Göring-Werke (preparations for the foundation of today's city of Salzgitter) Rhene was incorporated into the Wolfenbüttel district. Since 1965 the place belonged to the integrated municipality Innerstetal (since 1974 integrated municipality Baddeckestedt) and was incorporated on March 1, 1974 together with Binder, Oelber on the white road and Wartjenstedt as a district to Baddeckestedt.

  • As early as 1188 there were reports of two mills, an oil mill and a sawmill in Rhene. In 1664 only one oil and sawmill is mentioned in the Innerste southeast of the village. In the middle of the 18th century construction work was carried out by the Wöltingerode monastery. In 1841 Ludwig Mackensen became the new owner of the mill, who also owned the beer tree mill near Heere in the southeast. Mackensen built the Rhener mill to a Shellers order. It burned down completely in 1879, but was rebuilt. In the course of a fundamental renovation, a water turbine was installed in 1924, which is still used today (2017) to generate electricity. The C. Hahnemühle works from Bad Oeynhausen took over the mill in 1972. The company as Shellers was set in 2011 and the mill was sold afterwards.
  • The older of the two bells in the Rhen church dates from 1502 and was cast in Hildesheim. According to this, a chapel must have existed in the village at that time, the exact year of construction of which is not known. This is first mentioned in 1542 as a branch church of Wartjenstedt. Based on an inscription in today's church, it is assumed that today's church was rebuilt in 1614, or at least renovated. Until 1955 the cemetery was right next to the church. Since the dissolution of the parish association with Wartjenstedt in 1969, the Evangelical Lutheran church has belonged to the parish association Baddeckestedt, Oelber aw Weg and Rhene within the Goslar Provostry.
