Rhodocolea is a genus of plants that belongs tothe trumpet tree family (Bignoniaceae). The 15 or so species only occur in Madagascar .

description

Vegetative characteristics

Rhodocolea species are large trees or shrubs . The leaves are opposite and are pinnate unpaired; the rachis is divided into individual members. Pseudo stipples , as found in other members of the family, are missing.

Generative characteristics

The inflorescences are thyrsenic and can arise in the axils, terminal or stem-flowered.

The hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorphic and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The chalice is bell-shaped and has five teeth. The crown is white to pink and tubular to bell-shaped. The four fertile stamens do not protrude beyond the crown. The dust bags consist of two diverging counters. The ovary is elongated, cylindrical and smooth, it is surrounded by a cup-shaped flower base . The ovules are in multiple rows in the ovary chambers.

The fruits are elongated, cylindrical berries with a smooth surface or with six ribs. The seeds are circular and not winged.

Systematics and distribution

The genus Rhodocolea was established in 1887 by Henri Ernest Baillon in Bulletin Mensuel de la Société Linnéenne de Paris , Volume 1, p. 693. The type species is Rhodocolea nobilis Baill.

All species of the genus Rhodocolea occur only in Madagascar .

External system

The genus Rhodocolea belongs to the tribe Coleeae within the family of the Bignoniaceae . By molecular biology following relationships were in the tribe Coleeae be detected investigations from 2004 to 2015:
