Occurrence

The Brown Schnabelried occurs in Europe and in eastern North America from Canada to the United States. In Europe, the area stretches northwards as far as the Arctic Circle (especially in the Baltic Sea area ) and further especially into the subatlantic area; south to the Alps , to northern Italy and northern Spain . Brown Schnabelried is rare in England , Scotland and Ireland . In Germany it occurs mainly in the North German Plain in the Palatinate and Upper Palatinate .

In Central Europe it settles in Schlenken in raised bogs and in intermediate bogs , mainly in the north-western part of the Central European lowlands and in the rainwater of the Palatinate Mountains , the southern Black Forest , the Alpine foothills and the Alps . It is rare in north-west Central Europe, and overall it is very rare in Central Europe . The Braune Schnabelried lost many locations in Central Europe in the 20th century due to melioration .

The Braune Schnabelried needs muddy, acidic and at least temporarily flooded or very wet subsoil. It only thrives if the humidity is always high throughout the year. It does not thrive well with long snow cover. It is a character species of the Rhynchosporetum from the association Rhynchosporion.
