Richard Dirrane Bowes (born January 8, 1944 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is an American writer of science fiction and fantasy .

Life

Bowes grew up in South Boston and Dorchester and studied at Hofstra College on Long Island . In the 1970s and 1980s he was a game writer and developed board games for The National Lampoon , Dow Jones and Metropolitan Life .

Bowes' first novel Warchild appeared in 1986, followed by the sequel Goblin Market in 1988 . Both novels are set in an alternative world in New York . Transformations of Bowes' native New York also form the backdrop to several other stories by Bowes, such as the novel Feral Cell (1987), where playmaker Robert Leal dies of cancer and has fleeting visions of another world in which he does not die, but lives and is worshiped as God.

In addition to the novels, Bowes also wrote numerous short stories and novels. He summarized the series around Kevin Grierson into the fix-up novel Minions of the Moon (1999), which won the Lambda Literary Award in 2000. The story Streetcar Dreams contained therein had already won the World Fantasy Award in 1998 . Like Prince Harry in Shakespeare's Falstaff plays - from which the title comes - Kevin Grierson also has to grow up. Like Bowes, Kevin comes to New York from the Boston suburbs - again an alternative New York enriched with urban fantasy elements - and here has to deal with its idiosyncratic shadow and its sexual ambivalences.

Another short story series is Files of the Time Rangers , a mixture of time travel , alternative world and political satire , in which the Greek gods are doing some mischief in a New York of the 20th century and are kept in check by the Time Rangers , who in turn are Servant of the god Apollo . This series also resulted in a fix-up, the 2005 novel From the Files of the Time Rangers .

The narratives of the Dust Devil short story series ultimately formed the basis for the novel Dust Devil on a Quiet Street (2013). One of the stories, namely There's a Hole in the City (2005, German as Ein Loch in der Stadt ), won the 2006 International Horror Guild Award and the storySouth Million Writers Award.
