Richard Karlowitsch Maack
Richard Karlowitsch Maack ( Russian Ри́чард Ка́рлович Маак ; * 23 August July / 4 September 1825 greg. In Arensburg on Ösel , today Estonia ; † 13 November July / 25 November 1886 greg. In Saint Petersburg ) was a Baltic German - Russian naturalist , educator and explorer of Siberia and the Far East of Russia.
Life
After visiting the State University of Saint Petersburg , Maack was a teacher from 1852 and later a grammar school director in Irkutsk , from 1868 to 1879 chief inspector for the schools of Eastern Siberia , then a councilor of the Russian Ministry of Education in the capital.
In the 1850s Maack undertook a series of expeditions, so from 1853 to 1855 in the Vilyuy River Circle (now part of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) ), where he first orography , geology and population of the catchment areas of Vilyuy River , Tschona and Olenjok examined and described, from 1855 to 1856 in the Amur area and - after its annexation to the Russian Empire - from 1859 to 1860 in the Ussuri area .
Maack also described several new plant species, mostly in Eduard August von Regel's Tentamen florae ussuriensis.
Honors
In honor of Richard Maack of the Austro-Russian botanist named Franz Josef Ruprecht the Manchurian or Amur cherry ( Prunus maackii ), the honeysuckle Lonicera maackii (Amur honeysuckle) and the Pea genus of Maackia with the Asian yellowwood ( Maackia amurensis ). The knight butterfly Papilio maackii was also named in his honor.
