description

Asiatic yellowwood ( Maackia amurensis )

Vegetative characteristics

Maackia species are deciduous trees and shrubs . The gray-brown bark of the branches has elongated, brown lenticels (cork pores). The axillary buds are 5 to 7 millimeters wide, ovate and pointed and are covered by two overlapping, dark purple-brown and white hairy bud scales. Terminal buds are absent, but the "subterminal buds" act terminally.

The opposite or alternate arranged leaves are divided into petioles and leaf blades. The leaf blade is pinnate unpaired . The opposite or nearly opposite constantly arranged pinna leaflet only have short stems. Stipules are missing.

Generative characteristics

The flowers are in upright, dense, racemose inflorescences , which are usually terminal, individually or grouped in paniculate entire inflorescences . There are bracts. The flowers are bell-shaped and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The chalice has five teeth. The butterfly-shaped crown is white to greenish-white. The ten stamens are somewhat fused at their base. The almost sessile and very hairy carpel contains only a few ovules . The stylus is slightly curved, the scars are small and terminally.

The straight to curved legumes are elongated, linear and strongly flattened with a length of 3.5 to 5 centimeters and contain one to five seeds. The light brown seeds are long, flat, elliptical and 6 millimeters long.

Systematics and distribution

The genus Maackia was established in 1856 by Franz Josef Ruprecht .

The distribution area of the genus Maackia extends over East Asia . Of the approximately twelve species, seven occur in China, six of them only there.

The genus Maackia belongs to the tribe Sophoreae in the subfamily of the Faboideae within the legume family (Fabaceae). The botanical name Maackia is reminiscent of the Russian naturalist Richard Maack (1825–1886). A synonym of the genus is Buergeria Miq. .

The genus Maackia contains nine to twelve species:
