Richard W. Murphy
Richard William Murphy (* 29. July 1929 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is a former American diplomat and ambassador of the United States in retirement .
He is married to Anne Cook and has three children and seven grandchildren.
education
Until 1947 he attended the Phillips Exeter Academy . In 1951 he received his bachelor's degree from Harvard University . In 1953 he received a bachelor's degree from Emmanuel College at the University of Cambridge . From 1953 to 1955 he groin military service in the armed forces of the United States .
Career
In 1955 he joined the foreign service and was Vice Consul in Salisbury, Rhodesia until 1958 . From 1959 to 1971 he was employed in the Middle East Department. From 1971 to 1974 the ambassador was in Nouakchott ( Mauritania ). From 1974 to 1978 he was ambassador to Damascus ( Syria ). From 1978 to 1981 he was Jimmy Carter's ambassador to Ferdinand Marcos in Manila ( Philippines ). From 1981 to 1983 he was ambassador to Jeddah ( Saudi Arabia ). From October 28, 1983 to May 15, 1989, he was State Secretary for the Middle East . In this capacity, he was able to explain the Iran-Contra scandal to Saddam Hussein firsthand in 1986 .
From October 1, 1993 to June 30, 2004, he chaired the Middle East Roundtable at the Council on Foreign Relations . He currently serves on the board of directors of the United Nations Relief Society for Palestine Refugees in the Middle East .
Awards
He is a two-time recipient of the Secretary's Distinguished Service Award and a three-time recipient of the National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal .
