occupation

Richard Wagner is a film biography from 1913 by Carl Froelich , which was made on the occasion of the 100th birthday of the composer Richard Wagner . Alongside Dimitri Buchowetzki's films Danton (1920) and Peter the Great (1922) and Ernst Lubitsch's films Madame Dubarry (1919) and Anna Boleyn (1920), the film is one of the early German film biographies. Richard Wagner's world premiere took place at the opening of the UT Friedrichstrasse on May 13, 1913 in Berlin. It was first broadcast on Swiss television on May 15, 1983.

action

Richard Wagner starts his studies and can support his professors with some musical problems at the age of 17. In 1834, at the age of 21, he took up his first position as Kapellmeister in Lauchstädt . His motivation, however, is less the job than his love for the actress Minna Planer, who lives there. The two married in 1836, but Richard's nature soon plunged the couple into large debts. After his opera Rienzi in the Opera House in Dresden was performed very successfully, the just 30-year-old becomes the Hofkapellmeister appointed. A year later, however, Richard's opera The Flying Dutchman suffered a serious failure. When his Tannhäuser opera was booed by the audience a little later , he fell out of favor.

Richard's career has been shaped by constant ups and downs; he becomes involved in the intrigues of the nobility and his reputation is abused by politicians. In King Ludwig II of Bavaria he finally found a sponsor who supported him against all hostility.

criticism

“The Messter company must be sincerely congratulated on the success of the almost entirely solid film work. She gave the Germans a genuinely German film, opened up a glimpse into the creation of gods to thousands of the unprofitable classes who can never, never afford to attend the expensive festival. In a word, the film is one of the most eminent tools of a healthy public education. "

Film music

It made sense to use music from works by Richard Wagner for the film, because classical music was the most common film accompaniment at the time. However, the producers of the film were not prepared to pay the high publishing rights that were still valid at the time. Giuseppe Becce, who had been hired as an actor due to his resemblance to Wagner, suggested composing music that creates a clear connection to Wagner's work without fear of legal consequences. Becce processed music by Joseph Haydn , Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Ludwig van Beethoven and Gioacchino Rossini in a kind of “cinematic musical dramaturgy” by “distorting the music and working almost as a leitmotif with musical symbols and thus linking scenes with one another”. The result was a congenial plagiarism that is now considered an informative document of Wagner's reception. Becce's music is one of the first film scores in German film and laid the foundation for Becce's later work as a film music composer and author of cinema libraries as well as the standard work Allgemeine Handbuch der Filmmusik , which he edited together with Hans Erdmann and Ludwig Brav .
