Rival , Raille and Oron are, in this order, the three names of a more than 60 km long flowing water in the French departments of Isère and Drôme . Despite its considerable length, the body of water, the bed of which could evidently be turned over in several sections in flat terrain with little effort, is more of a stream than a river. The apparent disparity between length and size results from climate and use. The broad valley through which it flows is also drained by it, but above all it is irrigated with its water.

Hydrographically , Rival and Raille are defined as a unit in the French water database Sandre , with the number V34-0430 and a length of 35 km.

course

The brook Rival rises in the northern edge area of the high plateau Chambaran at the end of the valley near the village of La Forteresse at less than 650 m above sea level.

After a good eight kilometers, in the small town of Saint-Étienne-de-Saint-Geoirs, 400 m above sea level, it reaches the southern edge of a wide glacial valley that branches off from the Isère valley at Voreppe and leads straight west to the Rhône. The rest of the water course lies in this glacial valley. At Thodure , the Torrent de Fondon flows out at an altitude of 299 m, also from the northern edge of the Chambaran . Here the name changes from le Rival to la Raille . On the southern edge of Saint-Barthélemy , the raille enters an inland delta with the Île Barrin island, which is over 200 m long . Understanding the official definition is made more difficult by the name of the river "Rivière de Saint-Barthélemy":

  • In the IGN geoportal, it begins in a wetland north of the Raille and several hundred meters east of the Île Barrin. The names cross at a junction of watercourses and finally the Rivière de Saint-Barthélemy runs a few hundred meters parallel to the Oron, to the south.
  • SANDRE, on the other hand, describes Rivière de Saint-Barthélemy as an alternative name for the Oron . The cards at SANDRE are unlabeled and very small. This means that the stretch of water from the source of the Rival to the mouth of the Oron can be a little over a kilometer shorter than the sum of the specified lengths, 35 km and 27.8 km.

In the suburbs of Beaurepaire , all arms of the inland delta reunite to form a watercourse, Oron with the SANDRE number V34-0400. The course of the watercourse was adapted in several sections to the land requirements of agriculture and the requirements of traffic routes.

At La Maison Blanche, northeast of Saint-Sorlin-en-Valloire, there is a historic water mill, the Moulin d'Oron.

In Saint-Rambert-d'Albon , the brook flows into the 21.7 km long Les Collières , 2 km before it flows into a side canal of the Rhone called Dérivation de Péage-de-Roussillon . These last two kilometers in Saint-Rambert-d'Albon are also called Les Claires . This means that the river route from the source to the Rhone has a length of 63 to 64 km.
