Robert Förster (born January 27, 1978 in Markkleeberg ), called "Frösi", is a former German cyclist . He was considered a sprint specialist who won races primarily in the mass sprint. His greatest successes included three stage wins at the Giro d'Italia .

Career

Förster, who was 1.77 m tall and weighed 81 kg, received his first contract in 2001 with a UCI-licensed cycling team , Team Nürnberger , for which he won several stages of international tours .

In 2003 he moved to the Gerolsteiner team . His greatest successes there were a stage win at the Giro d'Italia in 2006 and two stage wins in 2007 , victories at the one-day race Groningen-Münster in 2003 and 2004 and the silver medal at the German road cycling championships in 2005. In July 2005, he took part in the Tour de for the first time France part. There he reached u. a. Third place on the 6th stage from Troyes to Nancy . After Team Gerolsteiner was dissolved, he moved to Team Milram . His only success for this team in 2009 was a stage win on the Tour of Turkey .

After the dissolution of the team Milram in 2011 he moved to the United States for UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team to the team at European races to lead. At the Tour de Langkawi in January, he drove the first win of the season after the winless previous year. In 2012, based on his experience, the management decided to integrate him as a driver and mentor in the team and to help the young sprinters in the team to win. One of them was Jake Keough. After a serious fall in training in February 2013, where he almost lost his leg, he fought his way back to the international top and in July 2013 won the 6th stage of the Tour of Qinghai Lake , a race in the hors category a stage success. After the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team limited the racing program to American and Asian competitions, Förster ended his career at the end of the 2015 season. After his career, Förster graduated from the master school. At the end of 2016 he graduated as a two-wheel mechanic. Since 2015 he has been the sole owner and managing director of Grupetto GmbH & Co KG, three specialist cycling shops, in Leipzig and Markkleeberg. In 2016 he was made an honorary citizen of his hometown of Markkleeberg. Förster has also been looking after the next generation since 2009. He organizes the Robert Förster Junior Cup. A racing series exclusively for children. Since 2018 he has been president of the RCF Markkleeberg cycling club. Förster also works as a trainer.
