Culture and sights

Buildings

St. Peter and Paul Church
  • The ruin of Benzenberg was once the mighty seat of power of the Counts of Rohrdorf. After the razing for the Meßkirch bedroom lock, there are only a few remains of the wall next to a large mound of rubble.
  • The Feldherrenhügel commemorates the battle of Meßkirch on May 5th, 1800 with its refuge with information boards , a decisive battle for later Germany. If the visibility is good, you can see the Alpine chain from the Zugspitze to the foothills of the Mont-Blanc massif.
  • Until 2013, a white and red transmitter mast that was recognizable from afar was a noticeable landmark and also the tallest structure in the Sigmaringen district. The Bodenseesender was built in 1964 transmitter of SWR for medium wave . The frequency 666 kHz was used to broadcast the SWR cont.ra program . The system, which previously consisted of four masts, was rebuilt several times. The last remaining 244 m high transmission mast was decommissioned in 2012 and blown up on October 10, 2013.
  • The Catholic Church of St. Peter and Paul was built between 1712 and 1715 as a baroque church, presumably by the court architect Johann Georg Brix . The nave was 16 m long and 9.20 m wide. The tower (a defense tower ) is 32 m high. From 1935 to 1936 the church was lengthened by 10 m and widened by 2.60 m. A massive column entrance with a wide stone staircase was added to the southern part. An air raid shelter was built under this new building . The altar , created around 1722, comes from the Franciscan convent church in Unlingen. In 1939 the church received an organ with electro-pneumatic membrane drawers II / 12 + 2 transmissions from M. Welte & Sons . It was renovated in 1993 by the Harald Rapp organ building workshop and has been preserved in its original form.
