Roland Bättig (born July 28, 1979 in Schötz ) is a former Swiss football player .

Career

Roland Bättig began his active career in the youth team at FC Schötz . He made his professional debut at SC Kriens , but returned to his youth club after just one season. At the beginning of the 2001/02 season, the defensive midfielder , who can also be used as a central defender , moved to Neuchâtel Xamax , where he was used for the first time in the top Swiss division (the then NLA ). In Neuchâtel he quickly developed into a regular player and crowd favorite, to whom he even had his own fan song. From summer 2004 Bättig was then employed by FC Aarau for two years , where he was also a member of the team. His contract, which was running out, was not extended, however, because in June 2006 the Aarau team signed Urs Schönenberger, who had recently been dismissed in Thun , as their new coach. It was known that he would not bet on Bättig.

So it came about that the Central Switzerland rejoined the Kriens team for the 2006/07 season, where he developed into one of the most important players in the preliminary round. The Lucerne were at this time along with that of Murat Yakin trained Concordia Basel and 2006 got off Neuchâtel Xamax to the career people in the Challenge League . The club of Xamaxien took in the second half of the then national team - goalkeeper Pascal Zuberbühler to strengthen and tried also to an immediate return Bättigs to Neuchâtel. Despite the current contract, the change became a fact in January 2007. Thanks in part to his achievements, Xamax was immediately promoted to the Axpo Super League. In the 2007/08 season, Bättig again disagreements with a coach were fatal. He was in the publicly communicated criticism of Gérard Castella and received less and less time. This led to Bättig finally leaving Xamax. During the winter break, he was signed by FC Luzern on loan until the end of the season, but then rarely played 90 minutes. Bättig's bad luck continued in the following season. Lucerne did not offer him a new contract, which is why he signed a contract with AC Bellinzona , which was still being trained by Vladimir Petković at the time. From summer 2008, however, Marco Schällibaum was the new head coach in Bellinzona , in whose squad Bättig did not find a place. The midfielder was deported by the Italian club owners together with the central defender Paolo Carbone to the Serie C1 club Como Calcio . Just a month later, the Swiss returned to Ticino because he criticized the working conditions in Como . Despite the valid contract, Roland Bättig was not even allowed to attend the training units - a right he had to fight for through legal means. It was only then that his move to AC Bellinzona was publicly announced. Since Bättig did not get any missions, he subsequently pushed for a contract termination, which the club management finally consented to after he threatened to take the route to the labor court. The defensive midfielder then completed a few training sessions at FC Thun and was able to convince coach Murat Yakin of his qualities. In July 2009 he signed a two-year contract with the Bernese Oberland . Hardly settled in Thun, Bättig, who embodies the classic number six , immediately consolidated his position as a calm pole in a very young team. He was on the pitch for 90 minutes in all 25 games he was called up to in the 2009/10 season. In doing so, he successfully fulfilled his task of stopping the opponent's attack and then bringing his own offensive people into play - in the typically calm manner, without drawing attention to himself with dribbles and scraps. Thanks to the experienced veteran, FC Thun became the Challenge League champion this season and was promoted to the Axpo Super League.

Even after the promotion, Bättig remained a sure value in the Thun team and, with two exceptions (serving a yellow / red ban due to two controversial hand games and a yellow card suspension ), played every game of the current season. In mid-February 2011 it became known that the Bernese Oberlanders had extended the expiring contract with their midfielder by one year until June 30, 2012 (with the option of a further season). At the same time it was communicated that Bättig will be the new captain of the Thuner. He entered this function, the successor of the now for the FC St. Gallen playing Argentinian Scarione at which the binding had been taken because of a lack of discipline. After the 2013/14 season , Bättig ended his footballing career.
