Roland Benz (biophysicist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Roland Benz (born July 22, 1943 in Singen (Hohentwiel) ) is a German biophysicist and electrophysiologist .

Life

Roland Benz studied mathematics , physics and chemistry at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg from 1963 to 1968 . Between his first and second state exams , he completed his legal traineeship in Freiburg im Breisgau . In 1972 he was at the University of Konstanz in Peter Läuger with the biological work valinomycin -mediated ion transport through neutral lipid membranes: influence of hydrocarbon chain length and temperature for Dr. rer. nat. PhD . He then worked until 1980 as a research assistant at the SFB 138 “Biological Interfaces” at the University of Constance. In 1977 he completed his habilitation in biophysics at the University of Konstanz.

From 1981 to 1986 he was a Heisenberg fellow of the German Research Foundation (DFG) . After visiting professorships at the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at the State University of New York (SUNY) Stony Brook University on Long Island (1980–1982) and at the Department of Microbiology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver , Canada (1984), he received 1986 a call to the chair of biotechnology at the Theodor Boveri Institute for Biosciences (Biozentrum) at the University of Würzburg.

Since April 1, 2009 he has held the “Wisdom Professorship” for biotechnology at Jacobs University Bremen . From 2009 to 2013 he was senior professor at the Rudolf Virchow Center , the research center for experimental biomedicine of the German Research Foundation (DFG) at the University of Würzburg.

Act

Benz's research focuses on the structure, periplast structure and organization of biomembranes , cell membranes in biophysical processes, the molecular basis of membrane proteins in microorganisms and higher organisms, with a particular interest in pore-forming peptides and proteins . He has published over 400 scientific papers on this ( h-index 62).

Together with the DFG, he was head of various working groups and spokesman for the Collaborative Research Centers:

  • Molecular basics of signal transmission and material transport in membranes (SFB 176; 1987–1999)
  • Plant performance under stress (SFB 251; 1989–1992)
  • Magnetic nuclear resonance in vivo and in vitro for the investigation of biomedical principles (DFG graduate college; 1992–1999)
  • Regulatory Membrane Proteins: From Recognition Mechanism to Pharmacological Target Structure (SFB 487; since 2000)

He has been a member of the European research training group Gene regulation in and by microbial pathogens since 2003 and a member of the Franco-German research training group Interference of pathogens with the host signaling machinery since 2005 .

The project developed by Intech PEV (Rimpar) and the working group of Prof. Dr. Intech BTS, founded by Roland Benz from the Department of Biotechnology at the University of Würzburg, received the Bavarian Environment Prize in 1999 for the control of sewage treatment plants that use the activated sludge process .

For many years he was Socrates representative of the Faculty of Biology at the University of Würzburg. Under his leadership, the institute for biotechnology ran the research blocks transporting bacterial toxins in target cells and making principles of wastewater treatment usable for student internships.

Roland Benz is a member of the University of Würzburg. Since 1963 he has been a member of the Catholic student association KDSt.V. Franco-Raetia zu Würzburg , whose honorary philistine senior since 2005, as well as the KDSt.V. Wildenstein Freiburg im Breisgau in the CV .
