Serafim Joantă (born September 4, 1948 in Boholț , Făgăraș County , Romania ) has been the Romanian Orthodox Archbishop and Metropolitan for Germany , Central and Northern Europe since 1994 .

education

The high school education up to the Abitur he completed in Făgăraş . His theological training took place in one of the two theological colleges in Romania approved by the communists , namely in Sibiu . There he obtained his licensing diploma . In 1982 he was transferred to the Orthodox Theological Institute “St. Serge “ in Paris . There he received his doctorate in 1985 with a dissertation on the history of Romanian hesychasm . After receiving his doctorate, he taught "The History of Ecumenical Councils 325–787" and "The History of the Orthodox Churches" at the same institute. Shortly before the fall of 1989 , he returned to Romania. Between 1989 and 1990 he worked as a research assistant at the theological faculty in Sibiu .

Church career

Between 1974 and 1975 he worked as a celibate priest in the village of Pojorta , near Făgăraş . Then, from 1975 to 1982, he was a museographer and priest at the diocese cathedral in Alba Iulia . On February 17, 1990, he received the tonsure as a monk and the rank of archimandrite . The ordination to the bishop took place a month later on March 11th and was made by Metropolitan Antonie Plămădeală and by the bishops concelebrating with him. As a result, he became auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Sibiu and carried the title Făgărăşanul (from Fogarasch). There he worked until 1994 and his area of ​​responsibility included missions, catechesis and diaconal activities in the Transylvanian metropolis. At the same time he teaches Christian mission and Orthodox spirituality at the Theological Faculty in Sibiu. As a special assignment, he has the management of the missionary association “The Lord's Army”, which at that time had around 300,000 members.
