description

Banks roses are vigorous, very long-lived climbing roses that grow up to 7 meters high. They also grow in hot, dry locations. On the long shoots, tufts with fragrant 1 centimeter flowers appear very early . This wild rose is hardy to −18 ° C ( USDA zone 7 ).

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 14, less often 28.

distribution

Rosa banksiae is native to subtropical China . It occurs in the provinces of Gansu , Guizhou , Henan , Hubei , Jiangsu , Sichuan and Yunnan at altitudes between 500 and 2200 meters above sea level.

Systematics

The first description of Rosa banksiae was in 1811 by William Townsend Aiton .

One can differentiate between the following varieties:

  • Rosa banksiae var. Banksiae W.T. Aiton (including Rosa banksiae var. Lutea Lindl. )
  • Rosa banksiae var. Normalis R.Br. (including Rosa banksiae f. lutescens Voss )

Rosa banksiae var. Lutea , a double yellow form of the Banks rose, was introduced by John Parks in 1824 on behalf of the Royal Horticultural Society from the Chinese province of Nanjing . It is hardy to −23 ° C ( USDA zone 6 ), flowers abundantly, but is the only one of the Banks roses that does not have a fragrance. The simple yellow form, Rosa banksiae f. lutescens has slightly larger flowers.

Information on the culture of the subtaxa

The double white form Rosa banksiae var. Banksiae is a garden rose already cultivated in China, which was brought to Kew Gardens by William Kerr in London in 1807 . The rose is named after the wife of the director of the botanical garden, Dorothea Banks. A specimen planted in Tombstone, Arizona in 1885 now has a trunk circumference of 3.5 meters and a canopy that covers 800 square meters. This is considered to be one of the largest and oldest rose specimens.

Hybrids of Banks roses and Western roses are not very common. The 'Purezza' variety was bred by the Italian rose breeder Mansuino. Its flowers are 4 cm in size, double and pure white.
