The Rotenkogel is 2762  m above sea level. A. high summit in the Granatspitz group in the Hohe Tauern in East Tyrol .

Location and surroundings

The double summit of the Rotenkogel is located in the southern Granatspitz group between the Iseltal in the west and the Kalser valley in the east. A ridge that slopes steeply on both sides connects it with the Gorner ( 2702  m ) to the northeast . While the ridge runs south to the Kegelstein ( 2418  m ), the Goldried kar connects to the north . The Goldriedsee located here looks heart-shaped from a certain perspective and is therefore often photographed for regional tourism advertising.

The Großglockner Resort Kals-Matrei is a good kilometer north of the summit , a ski area that has been connecting Matrei and Kals since 2008 .

geology

The lithology south of the Kals-Matreier-Törl is predominantly made up of platy, pale greenish quartzites and chlorite - sericite - slates . Chance occur feldspar on leading quartzite slate. While the Rotenkogel-Gorner ridge consists of acidic to basic orthogneiss , mica schist and paragneiss occur in the Goldriedkar and around the Cimaross . At the bowling stone monotonous Para rocks and dominate grana tables white mica schist.

Ascent

An ascent of the Rotenkogel requires surefootedness and a head for heights. The popular summit can be reached from the north via a marked hiking trail. The gondola lifts from Großdorf and Matrei can be used as a lift .

  • Oberpeischlach ( 1060  m ): over the Kegelstein, partly unmarked, 4 to 4½ hours
