The Eisbach is a forest brook in the Limpurger Mountains in the district of Schwäbisch Hall in north-eastern Baden-Württemberg , which flows into the middle Kocher from the right and almost in the opposite direction after a roughly 9 km long, south-south-east run in the village of Sulzbach in the municipality of Sulzbach-Laufen . Its left upper course is the Rotklingenbach , its right the Pfannenbach .

geography

Origin and course

The Eisbach arises from the union of its source streams Rotklingenbach and Pfannenbach at 455  m above sea level. NHN Höhe, about 300 m south of Winzenweiler , a suburb of Gaildorf . Both streams arise about a kilometer upwards on the sandstone plateau of the Limpurger Mountains , the slightly longer left Rotklingenbach at about 495  m above sea level. NHN , the right Pfannenbach at 490  m above sea level. NHN . The Eisbach flows from its confluence to continually south to south-east direction, first five kilometers long in a narrow forest valley, wherein he constantly perpendicular inflowing blade receives streams. After about six kilometers of running, the valley floor begins to widen more and more into a meadow, the creek has cleared the hard Corbula bank over a length of about 200 m and falls two meters at its end. After about eight kilometers, the first houses of Sulzbach appear , the Eisbach receives its most water-rich tributary, the Irsbach coming from the left , crosses Sulzbach and flows after - calculated from the origin of the Rotklingenbach - about 9.2 km, now a good 120 m deep dug into the surrounding mountains, at about 335.6  m above sea level. NHN in the stove running towards it .

Catchment area and watershed

The Eisbach has a five-sixth wooded catchment area of 19.4 km², the eastern part of which predominates. To the left of the creek there is an extensive plateau in front of the steeper drop to the east, in the north into the Fischach -, in the south then into the upper Bühler valley and its other left side valleys. The Eisbach with its tributaries drains a large part of this plateau in the east, while the watershed to the right of the Kochers is usually less than 1 km away due to its close proximity; Over the last half of the run, only a narrow and steep mountain ridge separates the Eisbach valley from the valley of the Kocher.

The watershed of the Eisbach runs from its mouth along the west side, initially over this ridge ( Eichelberg , Kieselberg , Ladstatt ) to the north, where a developed forest path soon follows. Only at the level of the village of Gaildorf- Bröckingen is there a moderately significant creek to the Kocher beyond, for example from a spur of the Kieselberg to the west, then follow one after the other on the western border the catchment areas of the right Kocher tributaries Bröckinger Bach , Argersbach , Dahnbach and finally that of the from the steep Nonnenloch next to the steep Steigenstraße of the L 1066 from Winzenweiler to Gaildorf up to Hagersbach . At the adjoining northeast border, the watershed on the Herschel reaches about 522  m above sea level. NHN the highest point that drains to the Eisbach.

In the north, on the plateau of the Limpurger Mountains with the tributary Amsbach of the Bühlbach, the sequence of the rivers competing towards the Fischach begins , on the eastern edge of the stratum it is the upper reaches of the Breitenbach and the hamlet of Bach . On this side, the coal road clearly shows the course of the watershed to the Fischach in nature, and this remains the same in the further course to the left of the sub-catchment area of the largest Eisbach tributary, the Irsbach , here the Klingenbach competes behind this high path to the upper Bühler. Before the Kohlwald clearing island, the watershed bends at a right angle to the southwest from Kohlwaldstraße and then runs over the mountain ledge on which Schloss Schmiedelfeld stands, down into the valley to the mouth of the Eisbach in Sulzbach. Here on the south side the Hambach first competes with the Klingenbach, then only smaller tributaries in turn to the Kocher.

The Eisbach with its longer upper course Rotklingenbach is approx. 9.2 km long, from its confluence with the right Pfannenbach on the name run it is 8.0 km and has a catchment area of 19.4 km².

Geology and landscape

The Eisbach lies in the Keuper over its entire length and has an almost linear gradient of 1.7%. Due to the clear water, the bottom of the stream can be seen almost everywhere with sandstone pebbles and sometimes a flint, on its bulging slopes and the flanks of the narrowly notched side blades there are many marl heaps without any vegetation cover, because large areas often break off. In a few places the valley floor is crossed by old, pierced dams, the former reservoirs behind them probably served as drifting lakes for the logging industry. Except in the uppermost course, where the two upper reaches of the Eisbach cross the state road 1066 and border an approximately 1 km² large clearing island around Winzenweiler, there is nowhere in the valley before Sulzbach human settlement or a public driveway. Over the larger part, however, a forest path follows the stream, from which some connecting paths lead to the surrounding forest heights. Several signposted hiking trails lead through the valley and the surrounding area.

Protected areas

The landscape protection area Eisbachtal and Irsbachtal covers an 82 hectare, mostly open area in the lower valleys of Eisbach and Irsbach and on the spur separating them. Between the two upper branches there is a 29 hectare water protection area around Winzenweiler. With the exception of the small portion of the Obersontheim community, the entire catchment area belongs to the Swabian-Franconian Forest Nature Park .

Water quality

As of 2004, the entire course of the course recorded for this purpose was slightly polluted from around the confluence of its two source streams (quality class I-II).

history

The Eisbach valley was part of the Limpurg tavern county until the beginning of the 18th century . A branch of the family sat at Schmiedelfeld Castle above the Eisbach estuary in Sulzbach.

Sights and buildings

Former Schmiedelfeld Castle from the 12th century, on a mountain spur above Sulzbach. It is a horseshoe-shaped building with a central courtyard, access is via a sloping ramp. Today the castle is used as a private residential building. The former palace church from the Renaissance , now renovated and rededicated as an event room, is located next to it .
