Roykey

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Roykey Wydh (born August 22, 1955 in Aruba ; † December 9, 2017 in Munich ) was a Dutch musician of world music , jazz , reggae , roots and ragga . In recent years he has also appeared as Roykey Creo .

Life

Until 1990

Roykey Wydh had Indian, Egyptian, African and French roots. He grew up on the Dutch -regierten Antilles -Insel Aruba to that off the coast of Venezuela is and a melting pot of African , South American and European trained cultures.

He came to Europe in the early 1980s and worked as a live and studio guitarist for acts such as Snowball , Klaus Doldingers Passport , Inga Rumpf , Lionel Richie , Patrick Gammon , Brian Auger , Jolly Kunjappu and Linton Kwesi Johnson .

He soon recorded his first solo album Secret Message (1984), an instrumental jazz album that was characterized by virtuosity and technical perfection. While he wrote, arranged and produced the music himself, his guitar playing was complemented by various musical guests such as drummers Curt Cress and Alphonse Mouzon , guitarist Larry Coryell , bassist Wolfgang Graf and Alex Bernauer on the synthesizer. In 1990 he recorded the blues album Auf Ein Wort Noch with Stefan Diestelmann .

1990s

In the 1990s, Roykey Wydh began a solo career. For this he developed his very own style of music, which he called Creo , based on his Creole homeland Aruba . He wrote the lyrics partly in English, partly in Papiamentu , the Creole idiom of Aruba composed of the official language Dutch, African dialects and English . In addition to the lead guitar, he also took on the lead vocals and, for studio recordings, other instruments such as bass, keyboard, drums and percussion.

“It became clear to me that for me it would have to be about merging the various musical traditions, whose legacy I carry within me, into a homogeneous whole: Afro, reggae and blues. From the beginning of 1990 on, I began to develop really more concrete ideas, to meditate on songs. I consciously took my time until everything became rounder, more harmonious and I found a certain simplicity, especially in my guitar playing. "( Roykey : https://www.bscmusic.com/de/artist_zone/121/roykey.htm )

The result was a sound that Roykey sometimes called Creo reggae, sometimes Creo blues. In 1993 the first album Creo Roots was released . Quiet songs with acoustic guitar alternated with pieces that are characterized by the use of electric guitar and keyboard. Percussion instruments as well as trumpet, trombone and saxophone were also used.

Concerts in the entire German-speaking area followed. The live album It Smells Live (1994) was created from concert recordings . It also contained many new titles that dealt increasingly with political issues such as war, arms exports and corruption. In 2006 a new edition appeared with the additional title Saying Save the World .

In January 1996, the new studio album Look Arong was released , to which Roykey explained: “This time we wanted to bring out our Creo Reggae as clearly as possible. That's why we reduced the Afro, funk and jazz elements. ”Once again Roykey deals in his songs with political issues such as environmental pollution and famine or in a serious way with phenomena from the interpersonal area. In his texts, Roykey consciously used the English he had learned on the streets of Aruba, because: “You won't find this language in any dictionary or learn it in any English course, but it conveys reality more vividly and without makeup than the official one English. In a sense, I learned it at the University of Life! "

This was followed by the best-of album Guitar Man . In addition to a selection of songs written by Roykey himself, it contained a new cover version of Bread's 1972 song The Guitar Man as the title track .

After the turn of the millennium, he moved to New York for a few years to work in the local music scene.

From 2004

In 2004 Roykey returned to Germany, where he recorded the album CREO (2007) with a new band . He mixed his reggae style together again and integrated elements of European folklore in addition to ragga, hip-hop, blues and world music influences .

Up until the end of his life, Roykey performed at festivals and his own concerts in German-speaking countries. The new song Shake belonged as well as older songs, u. a. Jogging , Randy and Guitar Man , among the regular parts of his performances. He also played songs by Bob Marley frequently.

From 2014 Roykey published individual songs digitally, including instrumental pieces. In 2017 he showed short samples from new recording sessions, on which Albrecht Huber could again be heard on the trumpet. On December 1, 2017 he gave a concert in the Upper Palatinate that would be his last.

Roykey Wydh died unexpectedly on December 9, 2017 in Munich.
