E. Rudolf Ottmer (born August 7, 1902 in Wolfenbüttel ; † September 10, 1974 in Recklinghausen ) was a German physicist , crystallographer , educator and founding director of the state office of the German Association for the Promotion of Mathematical and Scientific Education (MNU-LV Westphalia - Association to promote MINT teaching) in North Rhine-Westphalia .

Life

Ottmer, the son of a principal, graduated from high school in Wolfenbüttel at the end of February 1921 . Then living in Braunschweig , he studied physics and mathematics at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen , interrupted by a semester 1922/23 at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München . In December 1927 he received his doctorate in physics in Göttingen on the subject of knowledge of the absorption spectra of photoelectrically conductive alkali halides with Robert Wichard Pohl as Dr. phil. In 1928 he received his teaching qualifications to work as a physics and mathematics teacher at the grammar school, which he then practiced from 1930 after the two-year legal traineeship .

His dissertation was published in 1928 in issue 46 of the Zeitschrift für Physik . He researched the absorption spectra of color centers in alkali halide crystals (such as sodium chloride ), which was the focus of interest at the von Pohl school in Göttingen. At that time pioneering work on semiconductor physics was carried out there. Color centers are flaws in the crystal, in which in the simplest case an ion is missing, which is replaced by an electron (F-center), the electrons behave there like in a box potential. Usually the band gap from the valence to the conduction band in these crystals is so high that it cannot be overcome by visible light (they are colorless), except for such color centers. In addition to the F band , the most important band, there are other bands such as the M, R, N bands and corresponding color center configurations in which several color centers are adjacent (two for the M center). Ottmer discovered the M band in sodium fluoride, for example : he measured the photocurrent in the crystal that was excited by light. The name M-Band comes from the American physicist and engineer Julius Paul Molnar (1916-1973), who introduced the name M-Bands in 1940 in his unpublished dissertation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology .

In 1937 in Nazi Germany he had to complete basic military training with I./Flak Regiment 24 in Iserlohn .

As a lover of literature, especially poetry , in addition to his doctoral subject, the creation of common learning locations for the natural sciences and humanities was particularly close to his heart. During his time in Recklinghausen he built up the MNU regional office in North Rhine-Westphalia, which was initiated in Bonn and then set up in Recklinghausen next to the Hittorf-Gymnasium , as director. The location of Recklinghausen was chosen because the high school professor and physics teacher Paul Schürholz (1908–1953) worked there, whose physics collection survived the war years unscathed. Along with the construction of the MNU regional office, which is much larger than the original location in Bonn, the adjacent grammar school was also expanded. Until the completion of the first construction phase in 1954, Ottmer, as director of the regional office, was housed with his employees in the rooms of the grammar school. The part of the second construction phase was externally attached directly to the grammar school. The institute built under his aegis is now used by the Hittorf-Gymnasium for the MINT subjects.

Ottmer was married from 1928. From his marriage to his wife Erika, born in Münster, Winter, had a daughter and two sons.
