Rudy Riou (born January 22, 1980 in Béziers ) is a French football goalkeeper .

Career

Career start at RCO Agde

In the region Languedoc-Roussillon in southern France born Riou began his active career as a soccer goalkeeper in 1990 at RCO Agde in the town of Agde , which is also in the Languedoc-Roussillon. There he was used in the various youth teams until 1996 and then moved to the junior division of HSC Montpellier , where he was initially in the youth teams, but at the same time also in the B-team of the club with play in the fourth-class Championnat de France Amateur , which at that time still ran under the name National 2 (N2), was used. After he had already played in two championship games for the B-team of HSC Montpellier in the 1996/97 season in National 2 , he completed more after the league was renamed Championnat de France Amateur (CFA) in the 1997/98 season nine championship games for the B team.

UI Cup victory and relegation in Division 2

Another 13 league appearances followed in the 1998/99 season, in which Riou was also included for the first time in the squad of the professional team with play in the top French football league. After he was not a professional player in this season, he was used in 20 championship games in the following season 1999/2000 . The then 19-year-old made his league debut on July 31, 1999 in a 2-1 away win over Olympique Lyon , where he guarded the goal of his team for the full duration of the game. From this season, Riou was the best way to advance to number 1 in the goal of the professional team, although he had to give way to the more experienced Stéphane Cassard in the remaining 14 league games . Nevertheless, at the end of the season it was not enough for the team to stay in the league and so they were relegated to Division 2 as bottom of the table with only 31 points . Although the team had to relegate to the French second division at the end of the season, they still won one of the three finals in the UI Cup 1999 in August 1999 . Riou was used in a total of three UI Cup games for the team that drew 1-1 in the final first leg against Hamburger SV and won 3-0 in the second leg after a further 1-1 draw on penalties. Furthermore, the 1.85 m tall goalkeeper was used in three other B-team games.

Return to France's excellence

The 2000/01 season went much better for the young goalkeeper than the previous one. In 18 of 38 possible missions, Riou reached third place with the team in France's second division at the end of the season and was thus automatically eligible for the renewed promotion to Division 1. There he was used in 19 championship games the following season and reached 13th place with the team in the densely staggered final table. After the league was renamed from Division 1 to Ligue 1 , the committed goalkeeper became the real number 1 goal for HSC Montepellier in the 2002/03 season and was used in 28 championship games. In the remaining games, he let the two young Montepellier talents Laurent Pionnier and Jody Viviani , who both made their professional debuts this season, go ahead. The negative highlight for Riou this season was October 19, 2002, when he was sent off the field early in the 26th minute of the away game against EA Guingamp with the red card . For Riou this meant the first red card in his professional career. The game was lost 3-1 in the end after all goals were scored after Rious was sent off. At the end of the season, the team just managed to stay in Ligue 1 and was sixteenth with two points ahead of the first relegated, Le Havre AC .

In the following season 2003/04 Riou was again a regular goalkeeper, but could not prevent the relegation of his team to the second French football league and decided to change the club at the end of the season. In total, he was used in 31 league games for HSC Montepellier, in the remaining games, as in the previous season, he let the two talents go first. In his six seasons with the professional team, he was able to record a total of three appearances in league cup games (one game each in the seasons 1999/2000 , 2002/03 and 2003/04 ).

Regular at FC Istres

For the 2004/05 season followed for Riou within the top French division, a move to FC Istres , who was still represented in Ligue 2 in the previous season and automatically rose to Ligue 1 as third in the table. In his first league game for FC Istres against AJ Auxerre (0-0), the newcomer Riou was the player of the evening with his quick reflexes and successful parades. For the committed goalkeeper, another 25 appearances in the top French league followed this season, before he had to return to the second division with the team after 38 rounds on the bottom of the table.

But this time Riou remained loyal to his club and followed him after relegation to Ligue 2, where he became the absolute number 1 goal of the southern French with the 2005/06 season . On a record of 37 league games Riou came in just a single season, in only one game he granted precedence to Grégory Legrand , who was five years older than him and who was never really able to assert himself as a regular at his respective clubs in his entire career. In the final standings, Riou and FC Istres took 13th place in the Ligue 2. In the 2006/07 season things went much worse for the professional team. After 38 rounds played, in which Riou always guarded the goal of his team, the team had to accept 63 goals and thus most of the entire league and rose to 19th place in the National (D3) , the third highest division in French football. Overall, he was in his three seasons for FC Istres in three games in the Coupe de la Ligue ( 2005/06 (1 game), 2006/07 (2 games)) and also brought it to each use in the Coupe de France for the 2004/05 and 2005/06 seasons .

As a reserve in Toulouse and Marseille

Even before relegation, the goalkeeper changed again and even came to the top French league, where he signed a three-year contract with Toulouse FC at the end of May 2007 . There, however, was only the number 2 behind Nicolas Douchez and brought it so in the 2007/08 season on only three championship appearances, of which he played through only two over the full duration of the match. He also made it to an appearance in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup this season , where he was used for the full 90 minutes in the group stage in Group E in the last group game against Spartak Moscow . For Riou it was the first and so far (July 31, 2010) only appearance in this competition. At the end of the group stage, however, the team was eliminated from the current competition as last. In the league, too, things did not go very well for the professional team of FC Toulouse and so it happened that after 38 championship games they just managed to stay in Ligue 1 in 17th place.

After he was only able to record a single use in the B team, the amicable termination of the contract with the club and an immediate change to the successful French club Olympique Marseille followed at the end of the season . Negotiations with OM began at the end of the championship, although the negotiations were further intensified after the signing of Cédric Carrasso and the low prospect of Rious asserting himself at FC Toulouse. On October 29, 2008, Rious's first appearance for the southern French followed when he came on the pitch in a 1-1 away draw against FC Nantes at half-time for the ailing Steve Mandanda . For the team it was finally enough in the final standings with three points behind Girondins Bordeaux for the runner-up title in the top football division in France.

After he was in the same season as a substitute goalkeeper in OM's squad, which took part in the Coupe de la Ligue 2008/09 , the Coupe de France 2008/09 , the qualification for the UEFA Champions League 2008/09 and the subsequent competition itself, and could not record a single use there, the operations were also absent in the 2009/10 season . That same season, the team reached the French championship title six points behind Olympique Lyon and also won the Coupe de la Ligue 2009/10 and the Trophée des Champions 2010. Rudy Riou was not noticed in any of these games and entered the third without a competitive appearance Season at Olympique Marseille.

Since his move to FC Toulouse before the 2007/08 season and the later transfer to Olympique Marseille, Riou has not been able to present himself as a true regular in any team and has often only been classified as a second or third goalkeeper within the team.

Regular at the RSC Charleroi

Due to the reserve role at Olympique Marseille, Riou decided to make another move. The relegation-threatened Belgian first division club RSC Charleroi secured his services for half a year from January 2011. In the course of the second half of the season he became a regular in the gate. Nevertheless, he could not prevent Charleroi from finishing last in the 2011 season and ultimately relegating against KAS Eupen in the relegation round .

In the game against Standard Liège on March 12, 2011 (0-2), Riou was pelted with fireworks by opposing supporters and slightly injured.
