Ruslan Albertowitsch Sakharov ( Russian Руслан Альбертович Захаров ; born March 24, 1987 in Gorki ) is a Russian short tracker and Olympic champion .

Career

Sakharov celebrated his first major international success with eighth place over 1500 m at the 2008 Short Track World Championships . At the European Short Track Championships in Turin in 2009 , he won the 3000 m final. It wasn't enough for an all-around medal. At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , he started over 500, 1000 and 1500 m, but was eliminated in all three competitions in the heats and ended up in the rankings beyond the top 20.

Sakharov won his first international medals at the 2011 European Short Track Championships in Heerenveen . In addition to silver in the superfinal over 3000 m, he won bronze over the 1500 meter distance. In the overall all- around ranking, Sakharov missed bronze after Sjinkie Knegt got five extra points in the 3000 m final and thus pushed himself up to bronze.

In the 2012/13 season he celebrated his first podium finish in the World Cup with the 5000 meter relay in October in Calgary in third place. At the 2013 European Short Track Championships in Malmö , he won relay gold as a member of the Russian team.

At the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi 2014 , he won a gold medal with the Russian relay over 5000 m. He did not compete in the individual disciplines.
