Rustam Saidov

Rustam Saidov ( Cyrillic : Рустам Саидов; also Rustam Saidow ; born February 6, 1978 in Tashkent ) is a former Uzbek super heavyweight amateur boxer. He won the Asian Championships in 1999, 2002, 2004 and 2007 , and the Asian Games in 2002 and 2006 . His greatest successes were winning the bronze medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics and the bronze medal at the 2003 World Championships.

Boxing career

At the 18th Asian Championships in 1995 in the Uzbek capital Tashkent , he lost in the quarter-finals to the Iranian Bahman Azizpour.

At the 20th Asian Championships in 1999, which were also held in Tashkent, he finally won the gold medal. He defeated Mijiti Abuduxikeer from China, Ali Mansour from Lebanon and in the final the Kazakhs Muchtarchan Dildabekow (8: 7).

He then took part in the 27th Summer Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000 , where he won the bronze medal. He defeated the Egyptian Ahmed Abdel Samad 21: 8 on points and Artur Binkowski from Canada by knockout, before he lost this time in the semifinals to Muchtarchan Dildabekow on points (22:28).

In June 2001 he started at the 11th World Cup in the Northern Irish capital Belfast . He won against Francisco Palacios, who started for the US, before losing on points in the second fight against Cuban Odlanier Solís . At the 5th Goodwill Games in Brisbane , Australia , which took place in September of the same year , he won the silver medal. He had defeated the Cuban Pedro Carrión , but then failed against the Russian Alexander Powetkin .

At the 21st Asian Championships in Seremban (Malaysia) in June 2002 , he won the gold medal again with a final victory over Iranian Ali Rezaei. In October of the same year he also won the 14th Asian Games in Busan (South Korea). He defeated Harpal Singh from India (knockout), Muzaffar Iqbal from Pakistan (knockout) and in the final again the Kazakhs Muchtarchan Dildabekow (29:21).

At the 12th World Cup in 2003 in Bangkok (Thailand), he won against Ahmet Aksu from Turkey and Marius Marcu from Romania, before losing to Alexander Powetkin again on points in the semifinals and thus winning the bronze medal.

The 22nd Asian Championships in 2004 in Puerto Princesa in the Philippines, he won with a final victory against Siergiej Charitonow, who started for Tajikistan . At the 28th Summer Olympics in Athens, however, lost in the first fight against the Cuban Michel López (13:18).

At the 23rd Asian Championships in Vietnam in 2005 , he reached second place after losing to the Iranian Rohollah Hosseini in the final. At the subsequent 13th World Championships in China , he lost to the Russian Roman Romantschuk in the quarterfinals . Before that he won against the Hungarian Csaba Kurtucz (44:19) and against the Finn Robert Helenius (knockout).

At the Chemical Cup in April 2006, he lost to Vyacheslav Hlaskov from Ukraine. At the 15th Asian Games in Qatar in the same year , however, he again won the gold medal. He won against Nurpais Torobekov from Kyrgyzstan, Jassem Delavary from Iran and Muchtarchan Dildabekow.

At the 24th Asian Championships in June 2007 in Mongolia , he again won the gold medal. He defeated Rustam Rygebayev from Kazakhstan (30:12), Ahmed Wattar from Syria (knockout) and in the final Zhang Zhilei from China (14: 3). At the 14th World Cup in November of the same year in Chicago , he lost his first fight against the Russian Magomed Abdusalamov.

In 2008 Saidov tried in vain to qualify again for the Olympic Games at the Asian Olympic qualification tournament in Astana , as he failed in the semi-finals at Ghosoun Sumar, Syria (9: 6).

In the following years he was seen on the international level only in a single fight for Pyongyang in the World Series of Boxing season 2010/2011, which he lost by knockout in the 3rd round against Məhəmmədrəsul Məcidov and a tournament in Almaty 2011, in which he failed prematurely in the quarter-finals to Iwan Dytschko , Kazakhstan (AB 1st).
