The Ruta 21 (short 21-CH ) is a national road in the Región de Antofagasta in the great north of Chile. In its 196.3 km route, it connects Calama with the Paso Salar de Ollagüe border pass near Ollagüe on the border with Bolivia . This is where Ollagüe customs control is located. Later the road in the neighboring country continues as Ruta 5 to Uyuni and Oruro .

This highway fulfills the function of an international connection, which is necessary to develop trade and infrastructure between Bolivia and Chile. It also serves the need to connect the villages of the Altiplano and the inner settlements with the centers as well as the accessibility of touristically attractive sectors.

The first section of the road between Calama and the area around Lasana is paved. From this village to Puerto de Montaña it has a paved ceiling. The current condition of the path is a moderate blanket of gravel and earth and harbors problems in terms of reliability and drivability, for example because the road is interrupted in several places; for example through driveways, eroded embankments, floods during the “Bolivian winter” and crossing watercourses.

The official function of this Ruta was ratified in 2000 by Decree Nº 2136 by the Ministerio de Obras Públicas de Chile (MOP).
