Stefan Ruzowitzky (born December 25, 1961 in Vienna ) is an Austrian film director and screenwriter . In 2008, his feature film Die Fälscher was awarded the Oscar for best foreign language film.

Life

Ruzowitzky spent a large part of his childhood in Düsseldorf , where his father worked as a mechanical engineer. After his family returned to Austria, he attended the Academic Gymnasium Spittelwiese in Linz , where he also graduated . Ruzowitzky studied theater studies and history at the University of Vienna and made several music videos , for example for 3-o-Matic (“Hand in Hand”), N'Sync (“Tearin 'up my heart”) or Stefan Raab (“I only do still folk music ”). He has been married to Birgit Sturm (* 1968) since 1999; they have two children and live in Klosterneuburg .

In 1996 he made his directorial and screenplay debut with the feature film Tempo , which was awarded the Max Ophüls Prize. This was followed by Die Siebtelbauern, a critically acclaimed drama in the rural milieu of the Mühlviertel in the inter-war period, which received several international film awards. Ruzowitzky then directed the German thrillers Anatomie and Anatomie 2 . Anatomy attracted over two million visitors to the cinemas in Germany alone.

Ruzowitzky experienced his first and to date only flop with the international co-production Her Majesty's Men , which was not very successful with film reviews and at the box office. Above all, the film's script and acting were criticized.

In 2007 Ruzowitzky presented his new film The Forgers at the Berlinale 2007 . This concentration camp drama met with a benevolent response from criticism. In the same year, Ruzowitzky's drama was selected as the official Austrian contribution for the nomination for the best foreign language film at the 2008 Academy Awards. The Academy nominated 63 non-English-language productions on January 22, 2008. The film was able to prevail against foreign competitors at the 80th Academy Awards on February 24, 2008. In October 2008 he received the international Efebo d'Oro award in Agrigento (Sicily) and was honored for The Forgers .

Since October 2013 he has held the presidency of the Academy of Austrian Films together with Ursula Strauss .
