Ryszard Waśko (born February 21, 1948 in Nysa Opole Voivodeship ) is a Polish multimedia artist , photographer, filmmaker, painter and curator .

life and work

Ryszard Waśko studied from 1970 to 1975 at the State University of Film, Television and Theater Łódź . In addition to photography, Ryszard Waśko also made films in the 1970s. In 1971 he became a member of the Warsztat Formy Filmowej / Werkstatt der Filmform , which was founded in 1970 by Wojciech Bruszewski , Paweł Kwiek , Józef Robakowski , Andrzej Różycki and Zbigniew Rybczyński . From 1983 to 1990 he taught at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf , the Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach am Main , the University of the Arts in Berlin and the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen. From 1990 to 1992 Waśko was Program Director at MoMA PS1 , New York. From 2004 to 2005 he was appointed visiting professor at the Valand Art School in Gothenburg .

Curatorial activity

In 1981, when the free trade union Solidarność, headed by Lech Wałęsa, was flourishing and the political climate slowly became more open, Ryszard Waśko organized Construction in Process , the largest exhibition of contemporary, Polish and international art in Poland in Łódź . He invited artists such as Richard Serra , Sol LeWitt , Brian O'Doherty , Dennis Oppenheim , Lawrence Weiner and Richard Nonas , who in turn accepted the invitation. A symbolic alternative to other, more well-known art events was created. Construction in Process has become a worldwide network of art centers and took place in 1981 in Łódź, 1985 in Munich, 1989 in Łódź, 1993 in Łódź, 1995 in Israel, 1998 in Melbourne and 2000 in Bydgoszcz .

Waśko organized the Łódź Biennale , which took place for the first time in 2004. The director is Janusz Głowacki and the artistic director of the Polish section is Aneta Szyłak , while Emmett Williams , co-founder of the Fluxus movement , is responsible for the international section.

The International Artists' Museum (IAM) in Łódź was founded in 1989 by Ryszard Waśko, with Emmett Williams as President.
