history

The village was first mentioned in 1333 as Sancto Martinosi . During the Turkish wars in the 15th century, the settlement was completely destroyed and then re-founded by Serbs . The Bosnian Serbs settled here between 1415 and 1416.

The place St. Martin is entered on the Josephine land survey of 1717 . St. Martin had 26 houses and belonged to the Czakovar district . On the Mercy map of 1723, the place was assigned to the Bechkerek district and in 1779 to Torontál county .

From 1718 to 1778, Serbian Saint Martin was part of the Habsburg crown domain Temescher Banat . After the Austro-Hungarian Compromise (1867), the Banat was annexed to the Kingdom of Hungary within the dual monarchy . The official place name was Szerbszentmárton . The Treaty of Trianon on June 4, 1920 resulted in the triple division of the Banat, whereby Sânmartinu Sârbesc fell to the Kingdom of Romania .

To this day the village is mostly inhabited by Serbs.
