The Sängelberg near Oberreifenberg in the Hessian Hochtaunuskreis is 665  m above sea level. NHN high mountain in the Taunus . Within this low mountain range it is one of the higher independent peaks.

location

The Sängelberg is located in the eastern Hintertaunus in the Taunus Nature Park and belongs to the municipality of Schmitten . Its peak rises 1 km north of Oberreifenberg and just under 3 km northwest of the Großer Feldberg . The Weil passes the mountain in the west.

After the Weilsberg ( 700.7  m ) and the Dillenberg ( 682.4  m ), the Sängelberg is the third highest elevation in the eastern Hintertaunus. The fourth highest elevation, the horse's head ( 662.6  m ), rises four kilometers to the north .

Natural allocation

The Sängelberg belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Taunus (No. 30), in the main unit Eastern Hintertaunus (302) to the natural area Pferdskopf-Taunus (302.6).

Landscape image

The mountain is entirely covered with forest, mostly beech forest. At the highest point there is a survey stone and a summit cross. On a spur that travels to the north, remains of the wall and moat of the Hattstein Castle ruins can be found in the forest . South of the mountain is the delightful little meadow valley Schmittgrund with a secondary source of the Weil, the Weilborn .

Hohelai

The Hohelai is a slate rock rib on the western slope of the mountain that slopes steeply to Weil. In the lower area it forms a rock wall that rises 10 meters above the main road. The surrounding forest area also bears the name Hohelai.

Routes to the summit

The best impression of the mountain shape is gained when climbing out of the Weiltal, starting at a parking lot on Landstrasse 3025 , around 600 meters from the southwestern outskirts of Schmittens, through a short meadow valley up to the ruins of Hattstein Castle and on to the summit.
