Mahmoud Hosseini Zad
Mahmoud Hosseini Zad ( Persian محمود حسینی زاد, mæhmud ɛ hosɛjnizɑd ; * April 8, 1946 in Firūzkuh ) is an Iranian translator of contemporary German-language literature into Persian . He is also a writer , interpreter , literary judge and lecturer . He is considered the most important translator of German-language literature in Iran.
Life
When Hosseini Zad was 20 years old, he first went to Austria , and later to Munich , to study at the Ludwig Maximilians University , where he graduated in political science in 1974 with a diploma . When he returned to Iran , he started working for the state broadcaster of the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRIB). At the same time he was a lecturer in German language and literature at the University of Tehran , the Azad University and the Tarbiat Modarres University . As a student in Munich, he had already started to translate German-language literature into Persian, he continued his work in Iran and translated plays by Brecht and novels by Dürrenmatt into Persian . He has been translating contemporary German literature almost exclusively since the beginning of the 21st century. He has received awards for his translations, which are published in many editions. He also wrote two plays that won awards. Thanks to his efforts, the works of Judith Hermann , Ingo Schulze , Uwe Timm , Peter Stamm , Urs Widmer , are accessible to many Iranian readers. His commitment to literature and his interest in theater and film make him an excellent cultural mediator.
During the discussion at the Center Dürrenmatt Neuchâtel
In April 2015, the Center Dürrenmatt Neuchâtel organized a reading and discussion with Mahmoud Hosseini Zad as part of the Printemps Culturel. He spoke about the reception of Friedrich Dürrenmatt in Iran, his engagement as a translator and read from his translations. In an interview with Swiss radio and television he said about Dürrenmatt's works in Iran:

About the censorship in Iran, Hosseini Zad said:
"You don't know the censorship barriers in Iran. Unfortunately, we have this censorship authority or the said control authority. They don't give you any catalog or list of what you as a translator may or may not do. With this control you have no control ... When you take a book to the regulatory agency, you don't know whether it's allowed or not. For example, the words with sexuality or eroticism . In an interview with Deutschlandfunk Kultur , he mentioned a type of opening up in censorship during the Rouhani period:
"Well, I can already give you an example: The publisher where I publish my translations has 70 books that were banned during the Ahmadinejad era ... but my last piece of information, the number has been reduced to about ten or 13 . There is a certain opening there, yes. "
About the cultural developments after Ahmadinejad , he said:
"There are already movements. A simple example is that the publisher of my translations had 17 totally forbidden works in the regime of Ahmadinejad.
