The ETR 610 (from Italian E lettro T reno R apido , SBB name for the 2nd series RABe 503 ) is the three-system version of the ETR 600 for passenger traffic on the Swiss Federal Railways between Switzerland , Italy and Germany . The SBB also refer to the train as Astoro (derived from the Italian astore for "hawk"). The high-speed train is built by Alstom in Italy (ex Fiat Ferroviaria ). The design comes from Giorgio Giugiaro .

history

Order and delivery

In 2004, Cisalpino ordered 14 trains for cross-border traffic, which were presented to the public in June 2005. Trenitalia ordered an additional 12 trains of the ETR 600 model , which can only be used in Italy , which were delivered from mid-2008. The planned commissioning of the ETR 610 in December 2008 was delayed due to late delivery, necessary quality tests and staff training. In the course of 2009, the train was used on the Geneva – Milan line for the first time after the Federal Office of Transport granted ETR 610 a temporary permit in March 2009, subject to conditions for “commercial pre-operation” (with passengers and under close observation). From July 20, 2009, the first trains ran between Geneva and Milan, and since November 2009 they have also been used on the Lötschberg route (Basel – Milan). At the end of 2009, the trains were split between SBB and Trenitalia, as the joint subsidiary Cisalpino was dissolved.

Because of the delay, the manufacturer paid Alstom a contractual penalty in an undisclosed amount. The delays in delivery were justified by the fact that Alstom had placed the emphasis on the development of the Frecciarossa ( FS ETR 500 ), as those trains for the opening of the high-speed line Milan – Bologna were to be completed in December 2008.

Use and reorders

Trenitalia's ETR 610 were repainted and were used at times as a Frecciargento in inland traffic. SBB is using its trains on cross-border connections, initially from Geneva and Basel via the Simplon line to Milan . Since December 2015, they have also been used on the Gotthard route, where they replaced the ETR 470 .

On August 2, 2012, SBB ordered eight more ETR 610s, which replaced the ETR 470 on the Gotthard route in December 2014 after repeated problems with these trains. Cisalpino was already planning to use ETR 610 trains on the Gotthard route. Since the trains are already approved in Italy, they could be put into operation more quickly. At the beginning of 2015, SBB exercised an option for four more vehicles with a view to the opening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel . These four trains went into operation between October 2016 and March 2017. The trains are maintained in Geneva. The 29 RABe 501 multiple units ordered by SBB will be in service from 2019, well after the opening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel.

technology

The inner axles of the two end cars are motorized (connected by cardan shaft to the drive motors mounted lengthways on the floor of the car); this results in eight drive axles on 20 running axles. The train travels up to 250 kilometers per hour.

Because of the Lötschberg and Gotthard base tunnels , various official requirements had to be met. The trains are equipped with smoke detectors and the train has an emergency running capability of 15 minutes, so the traction equipment must remain functional 15 minutes after a fire breaks out.

The trains that have been re-ordered have 422 seats, 296 of them in second class, 108 in first class and 18 in the dining car. 42 of the 422 seats are priority seats with larger seat spacing for people with reduced mobility. The seat divider in 1st class is 2000 millimeters, in 2nd class 1900 millimeters.

The trains are equipped with ETCS Level 2 . An upgrade to ETCS Baseline 3 should take place by December 2021 .

business

Cisalpino wanted to use the trains between Switzerland and Milan , on the Lötschberg route , the routes from Geneva through the Simplon tunnel and on the Gotthard route from Zurich. With the end of operations by Cisalpino AG in December 2009, the ETR 610 fleet was split between SBB and Trenitalia. All trains received a new exterior design.

In June 2009 it became known that the 450-ton ETR 610 was too heavy for use on the Gotthard with arc-fast travel, but the expected gain in travel time would be lost without the tilting technology switched on. The older ETR 470 was therefore used for the Gotthard connections . After the timetable change in December 2010, a daily EC connection Basel – Lucerne – Gotthard – Milan – Venice was operated with ETR 610. The permit for driving at high speeds had not yet been granted, but the ETR 610 was allowed to travel at 140 km / h (20 km / h faster than normal) in the Gotthard peak tunnel. The other EC connections continued to run with ETR 470. In May 2011, the ETR 610 was approved for arc-fast driving on the Gotthard. However, due to the excessive axle load of the ETR 610, the maximum permissible speed of the N series had to be reduced on some sections , which also had an impact on the travel times of the ETR 470 and ICN.

After extensive tests, the permit for double traction on the Lötschberg-Simplon axis was granted. This enables the formation of 14-car trains (400 meters) and eliminates the need for double tours from Basel to Brig. However, the implementation initially failed due to the insufficient number of available trains. Since the re-order went into operation, EC 51 (Basel from 06:28 am) has been running in double traction, with the second composition only being open to travelers as far as Domodossola and traveling empty to Milan. More double units were added later.

Starting in April 2016, SBB invested a further CHF 12.9 million in maintenance measures to eliminate the technical malfunctions in the tilting technology and in the drive.

Since the timetable change on December 10, 2017, this train has been used as part of a new type of train EuroCity Express (ECE) on the Frankfurt am Main – Milan route.

From the timetable change in December 2020, the ETR 610 will be used on the then fully electrified route from Zurich via Lindau and Memmingen to Munich.

1st series

In December 2009, the ETR 610 fleet was split between SBB and Trenitalia, although not all trains had been delivered at that time. Since then, the trains have had the logo of the respective company and are independently maintained and used. They currently have different ETCS versions. In order to be able to use the Gotthard Base Tunnel, the seven SBB trains will be adapted to the trains of the second series and will then be given new numbers (503 001–007).

Extension of the 2nd series

On January 30, 2015, SBB ordered four more tilting trains, identical to the second series, for 120 million francs, in order to cope with the additional passenger volume in view of the opening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel and to increase operational flexibility, e.g. B. by double traction to increase. The first vehicle 503 019 was delivered in October 2016, and by the end of February 2017 all four vehicles had been handed over to SBB.
