Game mechanics

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a two-dimensional fighting game in which the player controls characters from well-known game series, especially well-known Nintendo game series . The player must knock the opponent out of the picture in any direction. Because the player inflicts damage on the opponent, a percentage display fills up. The higher this "damage display" is filled, the further the figure is thrown back by attacks.

New in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate are the "ghosts", images of characters from various video game franchises . The spirits are divided into four different classes, which they subdivide according to strength and rarity. In addition, the spirits belong to one of three categories. Each of these categories is superior to another category according to the scissors, stone, paper principle. The spirits can be placed on fighters and support them in battle.

In the single-player mode known as the "Star of Errant Lights", the player as Kirby has to save the other characters who have been transformed into souls.

fighter

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate introduced "Echo Fighter"; these are fighters who differ only slightly from other characters in their skills and attributes. With Echo Fighters, the game contains 76 fighters at the time of release, including all 64 fighters from the previous installments.

After the release there will be paid download extensions. It is known that there will be a total of five fighter sets, each consisting of a new character, a new battle arena and new pieces of music. The first of these is Joker from Persona 5 . Second, four heroes from Dragon Quest are added as fighters; this DLC will be released in summer 2019. The third DLC, which will appear in autumn 2019, consists of the fighter duo Banjo and Kazooie from Banjo-Kazooie . The fourth DLC fighter will be Terry Bogard from the Fatal Fury series. The fifth DLC will be Byleth from Fire Emblem: Three Houses . In the so-called Fighters Pass , all five DLCs that appear individually are included. In addition, the piranha plant was available as a fighter as an early buyer bonus until January 31, 2019 . This was activated for all early buyers at the end of January. As a buyer of the commercial version, you had to get the MyNintendo gold points. The piranha plant has been available since January 29, 2019.

On January 16, 2020, a second Fighters Pass with six more DLC fighters was announced. The first DLC character from the second Fighters Pass will be Min Min from ARMS and should be released in June 2020.

development

Like Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / for Wii U , Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was developed by Bandai Namco and Sora Ltd. Developed under the direction of Masahiro Sakurai .

Masahiro Sakurai got the idea of developing a new Super Smash Bros. game in December 2015 while he was still working on an expansion for the predecessor. The basic idea of the game was to bring all the fighters from the previous parts together in one game.

The game was first announced with a short teaser trailer during a Nintendo Direct on March 8, 2018. In this the two Inklings - known from Splatoon - could be seen, who shot each other with ink. At the end of the trailer, the Inkling's eye could see the Super Smash Bros. logo and outlines of the characters Mario and Link. It was noticeable that Link's appearance was based on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild . At the end of the trailer only the words "Super Smash Bros." appeared and the date was succinctly "2018".

During the Direct presentation at E3 2018, the game was titled for the first time and December 7, 2018 was named as the release date. In addition, the game's gameplay was shown for the first time . On August 8, 2018 and November 1, 2018, two "Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Directs" took place; these only contained information about Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. For example, Nintendo announced five DLC packages for the game in Direct from November 1 , which should appear gradually in the first year after publication.

On the night of December 6th to December 7th, 2018, in which the game was released, Joker from Persona 5 was revealed as the first DLC character at the Game Awards 2018 . Joker was activated for all Fighters Pass holders on April 18, 2019 with version 3.0.0. The stage builder was also introduced in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate free of charge for everyone on the same day by version 3.0.0, after the stage builder was shown in a commercial days before the unveiling. At E3 2019, two DLCs for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate were announced in the Nintendo Direct presentation . First, four heroes from Dragon Quest were announced as fighters, and secondly, Banjo & Kazooie from Banjo-Kazooie were announced as a fighter duo. It was announced at Nintendo Direct on September 5, 2019 that Fatal Fury's Terry Bogard would be the fourth DLC fighter and it has been confirmed that more DLC characters will be coming. On January 16, 2020, Byleth from Fire Emblem: Three Houses was announced as the fifth DLC fighter. In the Nintendo Direct Mini of March 26, 2020 it was confirmed that the sixth DLC character will come from ARMS ; on June 22nd, 2020 it was confirmed that it will be Min Min.

reception

Before publication

After Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was angeteast first time in March 2018, it was unclear whether the game a new part or a port of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is. After E3 2018 and Nintendo Direct on August 8, 2018, the game received praise for its scope, especially for the return of all of the previous characters. Others criticized Nintendo for the fact that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate took up too much of the entire Nintendo Direct presentation at E3 2018.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was voted the “hottest title of the year” by visitors during Gamescom 2018. After E3 2018, the game won the Game Critics Award for “Best Fighting Game ” of the year for presentation at E3 .

After publication

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was received largely positively by critics and fans. The game was particularly praised for its enormous character and stage selection. However, the online mode was criticized, which, similar to Super Smash Bros. Brawl , Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U , is not always smooth and playable. Missing modes from the predecessors were also criticized, such as the stage editor, which was only added later with version 3.0.0, and the bossrush mode, while the adventure mode “Star of Errant Lights” only loosely follows “The Subspace- Emissary ”from Super Smash Bros. Brawl .
