Sabine Schneider (born March 10, 1956 in Berlin-Kreuzberg ) is a German painter and graphic artist . Her works are shown internationally.

Life

From 1975 to 1981 Sabine Schneider studied painting at the Hochschule der Künste Berlin (HdK) with Wolfgang Petrick , graduating as a master class student ; from 1975 to 1983 studies of art education and works with the first state examination at the HdK Berlin.

In 1979, together with Michael Schulze, she was a founding member of the “Atelier Kulmerstrasse”, an artist self-help gallery.

In addition to her freelance work as a painter, in the 1980s she further developed the Hof Mutter Fourage, founded in 1978 by the actor Wolfgang Immenhausen and the author Stefan Reisner, into what is now known as the cultural location with the Kulturscheune and the Galerie Mutter Fourage . Under the motto “Art and Ecology”, they established a venue with concerts, theater performances and readings. Sabine Schneider was involved in the ecology movement for the preservation of the typical local developments in Wannsee and in the first initiatives for the rededication of the Liebermann villa on the Wannsee as a museum and a cultural site. As part of this activity, she offers painting courses in the garden of the Liebermann Villa, which are based on Liebermann's garden motifs.

From 1992 to 2005 she was a lecturer for image design at the University of Film and Television “Konrad Wolf” in Potsdam-Babelsberg (HFF).

Afterwards she was lecturer for image design and art history at the University of Film and Television "Konrad Wolf" in Potsdam-Babelsberg (HFF) in the courses camera , directing , animation and scenography .

Sabine Schneider has been a volunteer member of the board of the Association of Berlin Artists (VBK) since 2005 and has been its first chairwoman since 2007. She is the first female chairman of the VBK, which has been accepting female artists since 1990. As part of her cultural work within the VBK, she is particularly committed to international artist exchanges and has been developing the discourse program on current issues in art and art production as a project manager at the Arts Club Berlin in the VBK since 2012. Through this association she is also involved in the regularly held exhibitions, such as B. 2011 at the exhibition CIS & TRANS .

Sabine Schneider is married to the journalist Günter Bannas .

Artistic work

Influenced by the critical realist and teacher in Sabine Schneider Wolfgang Petrick's studies , her first works primarily point to an objective position. It addresses destruction and traces of catastrophic scenarios.

In the further development of figurative, theme-related painting and finally in detachment from the representational, she increasingly devotes herself to various aspects of abstraction . In the series of pictures Dancing Lines (2010) she concentrates on the elementary expression of line and color. Accordingly, her works are permeated with color and movement and reveal various manifestations of painterly sensations. The reference to Chinese calligraphy can be clearly seen.

In her current series of works, Fictional Worlds , Sabine Schneider visualizes the precarious geographical, civilizational and industrial conditions of our time by painting over discarded school cards from the 1970s and 1980s. Her artistic approach to the maps is intuitive and reflective at the same time, as she is inspired on the one hand by the aesthetics of the map and on the other by current, global problem areas. In this way, she relates to the resource-consuming ways of human life and at the same time expresses geopolitical problems through her artistic interventions. Country borders are changing, war and migration make cities appear or disappear, and border crossings form both new paths and new fronts. To illustrate this, Sabine Schneider eliminates the red lines symbolizing the borders, or lets them meander through the picture in a different way.
