Sabuatach ( Slov .: Zablate ) is a scattered settlement in the south of Austria ( Carinthia ). It had 33 inhabitants at the 2001 census. Until 1973 Sabuatach was in the municipality of Mieger . Since 1973 Sabuatach has been divided between the communities of Grafenstein (15 inhabitants) and Ebenthal in Carinthia (18 inhabitants).

geography

The scattered settlement is located in a tectonically created depression of the eastern Sattnitz ridge at an altitude of around 600 m. The valley running along the NS was originally occupied by extensive fen areas, which were converted into more intensively cultivable areas through amelioration around 1960. This made it possible for the affected farms, which had previously only obtained sour hay for their horses and bulls, to switch to more cow husbandry. In the west the Sattnitz conglomerate rises steeply to the plateau of Berg at around 680 m, in the east to the plateau of the Skarbin (700 m). In the southern part, the valley is blocked by a wide moraine ridge of the former Wörthersee glacier, on which the farm vlg. Lies fast.

The area can be reached on the one hand via the municipal road from Grafenstein, on the other hand on the local road connection from Ebenthal via Obermieger. The last section of the road to Grafenstein was not built until 1958.

The gorge, which eats its way down from Sabuatach to sand through the conglomerate, offers beautiful frozen waterfalls in winter. From the water reservoir in sand you can get to the waterfalls along the frozen stream over a few steep steps. These are up to 10 meters high and have trees on top to secure them.

Caves and legends

There are caves that are said to be more than 40 m deep and cross the mountain underground to Saager Castle and the village at the southeastern foot of the Sattnitz ridge. Once a cat that was thrown into the hole came out again in Saager.

The caves on the south walls of the Skarbin are said to have been inhabited as early as the Stone Age.

history

The Sabuatach valley was cultivated by four Huben (vlg. Wlattnig, Praschnig, Hubner and Schlebnig), to which from 1600 another 9 chaste came. To the south in the Mühlgraben almost every farmer had his own house mill, there were around 12 mills in total. Some of them were larger and also milled the grain for the Skarbin and Berg farms. The last mills were not shut down until after 1950.

economy

The vast area is only sparsely populated and the population mostly lives as a sideline from agriculture , here mainly from forest but also from livestock , and on the other hand the residents commute mainly to Ebenthal and Klagenfurt for better earning opportunities .

A local specialty is a private arboretum , which is currently home to about 240 types of wood from all over the world. The garden has been continuously expanded for about 10 years and also includes numerous herbaceous plants, including all the houseleek species native to Austria (genus Sempervivum ) or 10 species of native orchids .

The Sabuatach Arboretum is surrounded by a conspicuous 300 meter long and 10 meter high hedge. The hazelnut hedge is characterized by a very rich undergrowth with many spring geophytes (several anemone species, lark spur ( Corydalis solida ), yellow stars ( Gagea pratensis ) etc.), orchids, Turkish lilies ( Lilium martagon ), Beech asparagus ( Monotropa hypophegea ) etc.

Artist

The painter Werner Lössl built his home and studio here in this contemplative single-layer landscape .
