The Saldurspitze ( Italian Punta Saldura ), also Salurnspitze called, is a 3433  m high mountain in Saldurkamm in the southern Oetztal Alps in the Italian province of South Tyrol . Together with the somewhat higher Lagaunspitze , it forms a double peak with an impressive panoramic view. The mountain sends out pronounced ridges to the north, south-east and south-west. The first ascent took place in 1853 as part of the Austrian military survey, the Saldurspitze has been climbed for tourists since 1876. Due to its secluded location far from mountain huts and villages, it is one of the rarely visited peaks in the Ötztal Alps.

Location and surroundings

The Saldurkamm is a mountain range that begins in the north at the Innere Quellspitze and stretches south from the main Alpine ridge towards Vinschgau . The Saldurspitze and the surrounding peaks of the Saldurkamm have a great geographical dominance to the east towards the Schnalstal . To the west, the summit flanks drop into the Matscher valley . The tip is surrounded by glaciers , on the east side lies the Lazaunferner , which has been divided into several ice surfaces in the course of global warming , in the west the Northern Saldurferner and in the south the Lagaunferner . Neighboring mountains along the southeast ridge are the 3,439  m high Lagaunspitze, which is understood as the twin peaks of the Saldurspitze. In the course of the south-west ridge , separated by a notch at an altitude of 3358  m , lies the 3429  m high Saldurkopf , located on the north ridge of the Saldurspitze, separated by a firn-covered yoke ( 3225  m ), the Lazaunspitze at 3313  m . The village of Kurzras in the municipality of Schnals is about four kilometers as the crow flies northeast of the Saldurspitze.

perpetration

The path of the first climbers on September 7, 1876 through Carl Hecke from Reichenbach and his mountain guide Gabriel Spechtenhauser from Vent led from Kurzras in a south-westerly direction over the Lazaunferner over the north ridge up to the summit of the Saldurspitze and the Lagaunspitze. Despite the impressive view, the Saldurspitze and its neighboring peaks are rarely climbed, so the routes in the upper area are often not recognizable. The starting point for an ascent on the normal route (route of the first climbers) is the village of Kurzras at an altitude of 2011  m . From the village, the route takes in a westerly direction on the road number 11 up to the Lazaunalm ( 2427  m ), then continue along at a barely discernible Steindaubenweg to the northern part of the Lazaunferners . It continues as an alpine tour with appropriate equipment and experience over the crevice-rich glacier and the north ridge in easy climbing of difficulty level UIAA I in, according to literature, five hours to the summit. Some difficult climbing tours up to the UIAA III level of difficulty also lead over the other ridges to the Saldurspitze.

Surname

The name probably goes back to a pre-Roman * salurna or * saladura with the meaning "terrain with rivulets" (to * sala, "trickle").
