Sam & Dave were an American Soul - Duo . They were one of the first successful duos and are considered formative for the soul of the 1960s, especially the Memphis soul .
Career
Samuel "Sam" David Moore (born October 12, 1935 in Miami ) and David "Dave" Prater (born May 9, 1937 in Ocilla , Oregon, † April 9, 1988 in Sycamore , Georgia) began their singing careers in gospel choirs . They met for the first time in the "King Hearts Club" in Miami, where they also appeared together for the first time in 1961. The club manager became their manager. First singles appeared from 1962 on Roulette Records.
In 1965 the duo signed a contract with Atlantic Records . For political reasons, however , their albums were produced and recorded by Stax Records , with which Atlantic Records had a contract. Their first record there was Hold On, I'm Comin ' from 1966. Now it happened in quick succession: the title track and You Don't Know Like I Know were the beginning of a hit series, many of which made it into the top ten . The duo owed their nickname Double Dynamite , which is also the name of one of their albums, to their live performances .
In 1968 the contract between Stax and Atlantic Records ran out. However, since the duo was under contract with Atlantic, they could not rely on the help of Stax producers and songwriters Isaac Hayes and David Porter , nor on Booker T. & the MG's , which acted as the house band of Stax. The constant label changes and the fact that they did not produce any more hits worsened the relationship of the duo so much that they split up in 1970.
In the 1970s, Sam and Dave kept getting back together and produced a new album in 1978. With the success of the Blues Brothers film, Sam & Dave got back together in 1980. It should be noted that the film not only features the duo's music, but also that John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd cover the stage show by Sam & Dave in addition to the song Soul Man . In 1981 the duo went on a major tour and performed together for the last time on New Year's Eve of that year.
In 1988 Dave Prater, who had been struggling with drug problems for his entire life and was therefore in prison, had a fatal accident in a car.
No one heard from Sam for a long time. In 1986 he recorded the song Soul Man with Lou Reed for the film of the same name . In 1988 he was in front of the camera for a film. Musically joined Sam in 1992 again in evidence when he the album Human Touch by Bruce Springsteen participated. In the same year the duo was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame . In autumn 2006 he released the album Overnight Sensational , in which u. a. Wynonna , Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi , Sting , Eric Clapton , Steve Winwood , Mariah Carey , Zucchero , Vince Gill and Billy Preston performed .
In 2008, Rolling Stone listed Sam Moore as 85th of the 100 best singers of all time .
