The Catholic parish church of San Cornelio and San Cipriano in San Cebrián de Mudá , a municipality in the province of Palencia in the Spanish Autonomous Region of Castile and León , was built in the 13th century. The choir was probably not completed until the 15th century. Wall paintings attributed to the Master of San Felices have survived from the late 15th century . In 1993 the late Romanesque church, which is consecrated to the "liturgical twins", St. Cornelius and St. Cyprian , was declared a monument ( Bien de Interés Cultural ).

history

The church formerly belonged to a monastery that was subordinated to the Premonstratensian of Santa María la Real in Aguilar de Campoo in 1285 , a donation that the Castilian King Sancho IV confirmed in a document.

Capitals and fighters of the portal

The church is built of regularly hewn, ocher sandstone . In the west there is an open bell tower ( espadaña ) with a pointed gable, as is typical of the Romanesque churches in the region. The upper part of the gable is pierced by three arched openings; at the level of the nave there is another window, which is framed by two columns with capitals . It is surrounded by archivolts decorated with scrolls and diamond friezes .

The portal is located in a vestibule on the south facade, the archivolts of which rest on set columns with simple capitals. The outer and inner arches are also decorated with a diamond frieze, and small human heads are depicted on the warriors above the capitals. A row of corbels , which are carved with plant motifs, animals and people, runs under the roof approach .

The nave has a single nave and ends in a square choir in the east. It is covered by a pointed barrel underlaid with belt arches . The belt arches rest on half-columns , the capitals of which are provided with simple relief depictions of animals, plants and people.

Murals

The wall paintings of the choir date from the late 15th century and are attributed to the so-called Master of San Felices . The Lord's Supper is shown in the lower field on the left . On the big table where Jesus and the apostles are sitting, there are loaves of bread and fish. In the upper fields, scenes from the passion of Jesus are shown , such as the carrying of the cross, the flagellation and Jesus and the sleeping disciples on the Mount of Olives. On the right side two martyrs , the visitation and the flight into Egypt can be seen. Another scene shows the Archangel Michael weighing souls.

A wall painting in the nave depicts St. Christopher . Another depiction shows a bishop next to St. Sebastian, pierced by arrows, and St. Catherine , who holds her attribute , the sword, in her hands. The scene above takes up the theme of St. Gregory's Mass . Legend has it that Pope Gregory had doubts about the transubstantiation during a mass , whereupon Christ appeared to him with the instruments of suffering .
