The place is located at 623 m about 17 km northwest of the provincial capital Pistoia and about 50 km northwest of the regional capital Florence . The municipality is located in the landscape of the Val di Lima on the Lima River and in the climatic classification of Italian municipalities in Zone E, 2 813 GG. The Osservatorio Astronomico della Montagna Pistoiese is located in the municipality northeast of San Marcello Pistoiese .

history

The municipality was created on January 1, 2017 by merging the previously independent municipalities of San Marcello Pistoiese and Piteglio . In the referendum on May 8 and 9, 2016, 86.43% (29.77% turnout) voted in San Marcello Pistoiese for the union, in Piteglio 70.46% (40.92% turnout). The law merging the two municipalities is Legge Regionale n.35 of June 10, 2016. The town hall is located in San Marcello Pistoiese.
