Santa Ana is a town in the Santa Cruz Department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

location

Santa Ana is the central place of the Cantón Santa Ana in the district (Bolivian: Municipio ) San Ignacio de Velasco in the province of José Miguel de Velasco . The city is located at an altitude of 464 m in the Chiquitania region , a hilly landscape between Santa Cruz and the Brazilian border that is still untouched in parts .

history

The place was founded in 1755 by the Jesuit priest Julian Knogler from Gansheim . He did missionary work with the Chiquitos tribe from 1748 to 1767 .

Santa Ana is located in a north-easterly direction 445 kilometers by road from Santa Cruz, the capital of the department.

From Santa Cruz, the asphalted highway Ruta 4 leads 57 kilometers northwards via Warnes to Montero . Here it meets Ruta 10 , which leads to the east over a distance of 279 kilometers and crosses the towns of San Ramón , San Javier and Santa Rosa de Roca as an asphalt road. The road is unpaved for the remaining 60 kilometers to the provincial capital San Ignacio de Velasco , as well as on its 310 kilometers further east along the Brazilian border via San Vicente de la Frontera to San Matías and on to the Brazilian city of Cáceres .

A dirt road leads from San Ignacio to the southeast, which reaches Santa Ana after 45 kilometers and from there continues south to San Rafael , 23 kilometers away .

UNESCO world heritage

The city is known for one of the Jesuit reductions of the Chiquitos , which were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990 .
