Santa Cruz Mountains AVA (recognized since 1982) is a wine-growing region in the US state of California and is part of the supra-regional Central Coast AVA . The area is located in the Santa Cruz Mountains region and extends to the three administrative units of Santa Clara County , Santa Cruz County and San Mateo County , all of which are part of the San Francisco Bay Area .

In the past, the vineyards were repeatedly victims of the Pierce Disease vine disease .

Geography and climate

The area under vines is bounded on the one hand by the Santa Cruz Mountains and in the north by Half Moon Bay . The vineyards are at a height of 120 to 250 m above sea level. NN .

Wineries

The region gained worldwide reputation when the Paris wine jury in 1976 voted two wineries in the Santa Cruz Mountains among the ten best wineries worldwide. On the one hand, there was a white wine from Chardonnay vintage 1973 from David Bruce Winery (10th place among white wines) and a red wine from 1971 vintage from Monte Bello de Ridge Vineyards (5th place among red wines).
