history

facade

In the 16th century it is the same place a small shrine (or chapel ) called Santa Maria degli Ulivi have given that to the surrounding olive groves was named, and the passage of time by the hermits of St. Augustine and the Discalced Augustinians was expanded . Some scholars - in particular Michelangelo D'Ayala (in: Napoli Nobilissima , 1892) - deny this, however, and believe that it was a mix-up with another building that was actually located near San Potito .

The actual foundation by the Augustinians is dated to 1592, others to 1603. The monks had the church rebuilt from 1604 to 1630 by the architect Giovan Giacomo di Conforto . The consecration took place in 1653, in the presence of the Cardinal of Sorrento , Antonio Del Pezzo. It was one of the first churches on the hill of Fonseca, and in the 17th century was associated with Santa Teresa agli Studi , whose architect was also Conforto. Originally, the building was relatively picturesque in a small square that has disappeared due to the progressive development; therefore the unobstructed view of the facade is blocked today (status 2018, see Fig.)

Interior towards the entrance

According to Michelangelo D'Ayala (in: Napoli Nobilissima , 1892) the church was after the earthquake of 1688 by Arcangelo Guglielmelli renovated, which was paid for his work 1694th Even Lorenzo Vaccaro led by improvement works, and mid-18th century was Giuseppe Astarita the floor with marble prove; Another restoration took place in 1850 under the direction of Costantino Pimpinelli (everything after D'Ayala).

In 1860 the associated monastery was closed and from 1877 onwards it was used as a school as part of a program run by the Municipality of Naples ( Comune di Napoli ).

The church was by the 1980 Irpinia earthquake severely damaged, and was due to problems of static closed for decades. During this time she was also a victim of church robbery , in which not only holy water fonts and religious implements disappeared, but also valuable marble inlay from one of the altars. After decades and after careful restoration under the direction of Dr. Lucia Arbace and on behalf of the responsible Soprintendenza , the church was reopened in 2008.

The church used to hold famous paintings by Mattia Preti (the Madonna of Constantinople ), Luca Giordano and Massimo Stanzione , which are now hanging in the Museo di Capodimonte . During the restoration phase that began around 2000, other high-quality pictures by artists such as Agostino Beltrano , Giuseppe Marullo or Francesco Di Maria were overhauled and were able to return to the church.

description

Chapel of the left transept
High altar with organ

The interior presents itself in the form of a Latin cross with a nave and three side chapels on the right and left.

Lorenzo Vaccaro created the lavish and playful stucco decoration , especially in the vaulted ceiling of the nave and in the transept, with an Assumption of Mary in the middle medallion of the ceiling, surrounded by numerous angels and winged heads of seraphim and cherubim , as well as fruits and flowers. The music- making and singing angels on the ceiling were created by Bartolomeo Granucci and Nicola Mazzone between 1693 and 1698, and a frieze with acanthus runs under the entablature . The walls are structured by fluted pilasters of Ionic order, which are also decorated with small garlands and angel heads. The entire stucco is white, the walls a pale yellowish eggshell color. In the niches of the nave there are colored figures of saints of the Augustinian order.

The marble main altar is the work of Arcangelo Guglielmelli and Bartolomeo Ghetti . The surrounding paintings were made by Giacomo del Pò (1693 to 1695), and Andrea d'Aste (1710), the latter painted the Birth of Jesus and the Adoration of the Magi . The small baroque organ is located directly behind and above the altar, raised by an icon (see illustration).

In the sacristy there is a Madonna and Child by Massimo Stanzione (approx. 1640 to 1645), and in the “ Antisagrestia ” there is a painting by Domenico Antonio Vaccaro with Saint William of Aquitaine in prayer .
